Los Alamos National Laboratory Computing Systems Tec 5 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This job location is at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), located in Mercury, Nevada, approximately 60 miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada.

eXperience Information Technology (XIT) division is seeking an energetic and customer-focused Computing Systems Tec 5 for the XIT Classified Systems Services (XIT-CSS) group. XIT is responsible for the desktop and server support for computing environments at the Laboratory. The division is organized around support IT groups that are focused on supporting unclassified and classified programmatic and mission support needs, and a central services group that provides the enterprise level configuration management services for these computing environments.

The successful candidate will work at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and provide sole desktop support for 50 permanent party and numerous travelers from LANL and LLNL. Will support all LANL and LLNL systems and servers that feature a complex variety of platforms. The position requires someone with critical thinking skills who can work independently to maintain the JLON helpdesk and accomplish daily tasks and immediate requests without further direction. Job duties will include a full spectrum of system administration, including but not limited to:

  • Install, configure and troubleshoot systems and servers across a complex variety of platforms

  • Answer and manage to completion all support calls that come into the JLON helpdesk utalizing telephone and remote network access tools.

  • Document IT requests for help desk support using web based management tools and ensure requests are resolved in a timely manner

  • Proactively manage systems and servers utilizing Active Directory

  • Research emerging technologies, new industry trends, hardware and software tools and solutions

  • Perform system installations using approved system images and Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software

  • Manage projects to fulfill customer technical needs

  • Configure hard drive encryption software such as WinMagic, Guardian Edge and BitLocker

  • Serve as sole record keeper for all paperwork related to network and computer accounts

  • Perform complete software and hardware upgrades to include system replacements for computer systems used by JLON and laboratory personnel.

  • Maintain network printers and scanners

  • Backup, archive and secure all user data when employees separate from the lab

  • Other duties as assigned by IT manager

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of Windows operating systems and/or Virtual environments and related hardware

  • Experience troubleshooting and resolving operating system, hardware and application issues

  • Experience with system patching and vunerability remediation

  • Experience utilizing automated installation, configuration management and backup software (Acronis / Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery software, etc.)

  • Experience testing, repairing and evaluating Information Architecture (IA) standard software, including operating system and IA standard hardware

Training/Certifications: Applicable advanced vendor certification (Microsoft, VMware, NetApp, CompTIA A+, CCNA)

Education/Experience: Position requires a High School diploma or equivalency and 6 years directly related experience; or; an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active DOE L or Q clearance, or equivalent, transferable clearance

  • Experience installing, configuring and managing servers

  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networks and switches.

  • Knowledge in the use of Entrust encryption software

Location: This position is located at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) located about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NV. Employees can either take a commuter bus, carpool, or individually drive to reporting work locations.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
