Los Alamos National Laboratory Controls Software Team Member (R&D Scientist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Accelerator Operations Technology (AOT) Division provides systems engineering, program management and operational support to ensure the safety and reliability of the LANSCE accelerator complex. AOT Division is responsible for the operation, maintenance and engineering upgrades necessary to provide high quality beams to a variety of experimental and production facilities. The Instrumentation and Controls Group (AOT-IC) preforms a number of technical functions in support of AOT Division goals. As a member of AOT-IC, the successful applicant for this position will be expected to work as a member of the Software Controls team whose primary responsibility is to support the operation of the control and data acquisition systems deployed at the LANSCE facility. The successful applicant will be expected to provide automated accelerator control-system software development and control-system operational and maintenance support which will require interacting with controls engineers, physicists, operators, instrumentation and controls technicians and others. The LANSCE Control System incorporates Linux–, RTEMS-, VxWorks–, and LabVIEW-based EPICS tools, PLCs, and legacy VMS-based control and application software. Job responsibilities will include software engineering, maintenance and upgrades of current systems, documentation, and participation in evaluation, design and development of future control systems.

Required Skills (skills necessary to do the job)

  • Experience developing all aspects of a large (10000 LOC) object-oriented application, including design, user interface, thread management, and interaction with distributed elements.

  • Extensive programming experience in Java.

  • Experience with engineering design cycle: requirements gathering, design, implementation, debugging, testing, and support.

  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated experience working on medium- or large-scale projects and as a member of a team.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Programming experience with VxWorks or RTEMS.

  • Programming experience in Bash, Perl, Tcl, or LabVIEW.

  • Experience in Linux system management: creating accounts, configuring system characteristics, installation of software, etc.

  • Experience in network management: NIS, DNS, DHCP, etc.

  • Experience designing/developing automated control system software

  • Knowledge of control & data acquisition theory and instrumentation hardware

  • Programming experience with the EPICS toolkit (Experimental Physics Industrial Control System).

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

Education: B.S. (M.S. or Ph.D. preferred) in computer science, electrical or controls engineering, physics or physical science, or related fields plus two years’ experience.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
