The Nuclear Process Infrastructure Division (NPI) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking intelligent, capable, and inquisitive candidates with a broad scientific background and a mastery of data science and related skills. We are currently offering competitively paid graduate research appointments at the post-masters level for eligible candidates. Successful candidates will work in an independent fashion, employing a variety of techniques to analyze operational data related to environmental stewardship. Successful candidates will build data tools, identify opportunities for improvement, produce succinct and convincing communications, and help us ensure that our processes are maximally efficient while remaining safe and compliant with all applicable regulations.
The term of the appointment is 1 to 2 years; depending on the candidate’s performance and the institutional funding availability, there are opportunities to extend the appointment by transitioning to other types of LANL positions. This position is intended as a pipeline for US Department of Energy National Laboratories, therefore eligibility for a security clearance is a requirement for this position.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Current Enrollment: Enrolled in or a recent graduate of an accredited graduate degree program in any rigorous data intensive discipline. Examples of data intensive disciplines include statistics, mathematics, engineering, economics, operations research, physics, chemistry, biology, ecology, or related subdisciplines. Must be a recent graduate, or enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent), or be in your final semester of study and enrolled in sufficient credit hours to complete your degree with a projected completion date prior to Jan 1, 2022. Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) preferably from an ABET accredited college or university.
Mathematical Proficiency: Must be mathematically proficient at the advanced undergraduate level including coursework in statistics, vector calculus and linear algebra or their respective equivalents.
Computer Science Education/Experience: Must have intermediate-level programming skills including coursework demonstrating knowledge of algorithms, data structures and the ability to write complex code in a general programming language such as C, Java, Python, or similar. Must have experience with statistical or rapid-prototyping computing environments for the exploration of data such as R, Stata, MATLAB, Python/Pandas/Matplotlib.
Data Science: Must have experience applying concepts, modeling, and visualization to open ended problems in an academic or professional setting.
Experience with one or more of the following methodologies: statistical modeling, parameter estimation, and machine learning;
Additional skills in mathematics, statistics, data science, or computer science demonstrated by coursework beyond the minimum requirements;
Experience with GUI programming, web programming, and especially database programming such as SQL;
Ability to reason about program correctness using proofs (induction, recursion, computability);
Familiarity with scientific research methods and data demonstrated by completed coursework in the natural sciences (i.e. biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, material science, and astronomy);
Experimental techniques currently used within your selected subfield(s);
Laboratory experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices;
Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context; and
Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
