Los Alamos National Laboratory DDD Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

MST-8 is seeking a postdoc with expertise in computational materials science. The aim is to develop and use advanced modeling methods to study the evolution of the mechanical response and the nature of microstructure evolution processes as a function of environment. The modeling techniques to be used and developed include discrete dislocation dynamics, Phase Field modeling, higher order continuum mechanics (e.g. strain gradient plasticity), crystal plasticity based constitutive modeling and Eshelbian based homogenization schemes (e.g. VPSC, EPSC).

Particular emphasis will be placed on diffusionless transformations (e.g. twinning, phase transformations) in hexagonal close packed (HCP) metals. The successful candidate will work with a team of experimentalist and modelers to develop and validate models of HCP deformation. Of particular importance is the role of interfaces (twin and phase boundaries) and the 3D nature of boundary kinetics. The position will be awarded to the candidate demonstrating exceptional talent with a successful collaborative and scientific track record.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expertise is required in using Discrete dislocation dynamics models.

  • Experience in developing numerical simulation package.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of metals deformation behavior.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Phase field modeling schemes.

  • Experience with HCP metals.

  • Experience with GPU base programming.

  • Experience with DDD.


  • A PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related engineering discipline completed within the last 5 years or soon to be completed.
