Los Alamos National Laboratory Deputy Facility Operations Director in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Join the TA55 Facilities Operations Division (TA-55 DO) & provide the Associate Lab Director for Weapons Production (ALDWP) and their tenants, with Safe, Secure, Compliant and Available Facilities! The TA55 Facilities Operations Division has an immediate opening for a Deputy Facility Operations Director (Manufacturing Manager 5) to provide support to the FOD over areas of Operations and Management of facilities at the Plutonium Facility, RLUOB, RLW, CMR, TWF, RANT, and WCCR.

Reporting to the TA55 Facilities Operations (TA-55 DO) division leader, the Deputy Facility Operations Director (Manufacturing Manager 5) is responsible for managing and maintaining safe, secure, and compliant work environments at multiple facilities enabling efficient and effective mission execution. As the Deputy FOD, you will authorize and/or manage all operational activities including safety basis; health, safety and environmental management; security; quality assurance and work control; engineering; maintenance; and budgets.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Facility Management:

  • Expert knowledge and proven experience in Facility Management, to include: Maintenance, Engineering, Safety Basis, Operations, Radiation Protection, Environmental Management, Industrial Hygiene.

Leadership and Communication:

  • Proven leadership and management ability. Ability to promote an open and honest communication environment, to develop mutual trust and teamwork, and to facilitate employee self-development.

  • Successful experience in leading a management team in organizational strategic planning initiatives to include establishing, monitoring, and reporting on performance metrics.

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing at all levels.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Expert knowledge and demonstrated experience in Nuclear Operations and implementation of applicable regulatory requirements and expert knowledge of industrial/nuclear work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, lock-out/tag-out and facility policies and procedures.

Safety Management:

Expert knowledge and demonstrated experience in conduct of operationsand quality assurance programs.


DOE Order 426.2 requires a BS, and 4 years of nuclear experience.

Education/Experience :A minimum of a bachelors’ degree required in one of the fields mentioned and 12 years of related experience. Four years work experience in a nuclear facility. Education or experience that is job-related may be substituted for a degree on a case-by-case basis.

Desired Qualifications:


  • In-depth knowledge of the Laboratory's organizational structure and objectives.­

  • Knowledge of the ALDWP technical, manufacturing portfolio and an understanding of how the operations broadly supports LANL’s national security science mission areas including Weapons, Global Security, and Energy Programs.


Successful experience in project leadership and/or program management.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served at least one year of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
