Los Alamos National Laboratory Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, Engineering, Operations, and Physics (J-6) Group is looking for a goal-oriented and driven individual to join the J Division leadership team as the J-6 Deputy Group Leader. This position is a half-time (0.5 FTE) management position and half-time program/project direct-funded position that supports activities within J-6. The selected candidate will apply his/her experience to contribute to Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) engineering, physics, experimentation, and testing operations.
The selected candidate will report to the Group Leader and team with J-6 to provide scientific and technical leadership to advance the J-6 group in supporting the DARHT facility, J Division, and the broader national security mission for Los Alamos National Laboratory.
J-6 provides excellence in accelerator research & development for X-ray flash radiography and operates both axes of the DARHT facility. J-6 is a dynamic team embarking on a new era in advanced hydro testing with an exciting future in next generation capability for DARHT and integrated weapon testing. What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated management and leadership of technical projects and personnel, including teaming, collaborations, and guiding cross-functional teams to accomplish larger program goals. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated experience in recruiting, evaluating, hiring, and mentoring staff. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with all levels of personnel and customers, as well as experience providing technical direction, mentoring, coordinating/monitoring the work of others, and serving as a role model for effective and creative technical leadership. Demonstrated abilities to resolve conflict and to build consensus.
Strong background and experience in one or more of the following: linear induction accelerators, charged-particle accelerators, pulsed power systems, advanced synchrotron light sources, magneto-hydrodynamics, high-energy density physics, or other large-scale scientific facility.
Demonstrated competence in these areas though technical publications, reports, advising and serving on professional and peer-review type committees, recognition from technical societies, academic qualifications or other evidence of technical contributions.
Conduct of Operations
Demonstrated experience implementing conduct of operations for scientific experimentation where safety and security are absolute priority. Experience developing technical procedures, applying safety and security protocols, and knowledge of US Department of Energy regulations that apply to accelerator operations or other relevant experience with large-scale scientific facilities.
Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
An advanced degree in a scientific or engineering field from accredited university or college is required. A Ph.D. in a relevant technical discipline is preferred.
In-depth knowledge and experience with linear induction accelerators and charged particle accelerators, electron beam generation, electron optics and beam transport
Experience in design and safe operation of pulsed power systems
Working knowledge of stockpile stewardship and nuclear weapon design principles
Experience in execution of complex and multi-faceted dynamic experimentation
Experience in US Department of Energy regulations for accelerator operations

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
