What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Designer/Drafter 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. The Design/Drafter position within the Engineering Services Division (ESD) is assigned to the Facility System Engineering (ES-FE) Group responsible for plant engineering services and the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program implementation at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The positions are in nuclear or non-nuclear facilities across 26 miles of the Laboratory. The program elements including processes, standards, training, and qualification are generally applicable throughout the life cycle of a facility. They exist to effectively manage risks and satisfy customer requirements, needs, and expectations in a safe, secure, cost effective, and environmentally responsible manner.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties for this position. You will work as part of the Engineering Services multidiscipline design team in support of maintaining and upgrading Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) facilities. Preparing quality Computer-Aided Design (CAD) drawings that are in compliance with LANL CAD Standards. You will interface with clients, other designers, and engineers to aid in the development of creative cost effective solutions. During the design and construction activities will require interface and coordination with other departments and customers. In all aspects of the job duties you will promote leadership, quality, and safety values. Participation in field walk downs and data gathering of existing facilities, systems, structures and components.

Design Drafter 2 ($48,600 - $74,700)

As a Designer Drafter 2, you will use your familiarity with industry standards such as ASME, ASTM, AWS, IEEE as related to design field and the use of 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce models, drawings, layouts and engineering concepts; generate partial design packages for complex components, assemblies, facilities, equipment and/or systems; and independently define modeling structure for large, complex design projects. You will also resolve design package issues by facilitating design reviews, collaborating with engineers and stakeholders on hardware design, fabrication, assembly and testing.

Accordingly, the following duties of this position will include, but limited to:

  • Works with customer to define requirements for the design solution.

  • Acts as site support in multiple disciplines and applies cross-functional knowledge to resolve design issues.

  • Supports modeling standards optimizing CAD best practices for efficiency and achievability.

  • May be involved in design reviews with stakeholders, addressing compatibility between of design drawings and models with other disciplines, clarifying interfaces and resolving issues.

  • May support engineers in dimensioning strategies. Mentor lower-level designers in American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y14.5 or Laboratory drafting manual and may perform drawing checks.

  • May supervise work of others and performs own work with minimal direction. Completed work is reviewed from the expectation of expert results without appreciable direction. Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective for desired results.

  • Be involved with technical solutions to complex and/or unique problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity and independence. Solutions are frequently original and impact the outcome of the entire project. Usually includes some responsibility for coordination and participation in developing the final product.

Design Drafter 3 ($58,000 - $90,800)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level as a Design Drafter 3, you will:

  • Self-directed in determining technical objectives of assignments, which may be completed without established procedures.

  • Use and apply advanced technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques in the completion of complex work assignments.

  • Responsible for the development and design of large projects.

  • Define modeling standards optimizing CAD best practices for efficiency and achievability.

  • Facilitate and be involved in design reviews with stakeholders, addressing compatibility between of design drawings and models with other disciplines, clarifying interfaces and resolving issues.

  • Develop and can support novel design solutions for unique and non-standard design challenges in either static or dynamic applications.

  • Advise engineers in dimensioning strategies.

  • Provide technical solutions to complex and/or unique problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity and independence. Solutions are frequently original and impact the outcome of the entire project. Usually includes some responsibility for coordination and participation in developing the final product.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience in use of computer-aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software tools to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components or systems.

  • Working level understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principals for application of symbols, notes, GD&T to drawings and models to capture design intent

  • Ability to grasp engineering, design, and drafting concept related to a mechanical, electro/mechanical or electrical disciplines.

  • Fundamental understanding of:

  • ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function.

  • Knowledge of principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms.

  • Component and tool design, fixturing, printed circuit boards, schematics, and facility equipment

  • Machine shop equipment like a mill, lathe, drill press, welder and inspection equipment

  • Engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture.

  • Work well in teams and with minimal guidance from a senior level technician on non-routine tasks.

Additional Job Requirements for Design/Drafter 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Proficient use of computer-aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software tools used to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components or systems.

  • Intermediate understanding of:

  • ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function.

  • Engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to a mechanical, electro/mechanical or electrical disciplines.

  • Modeling and drawing drafting principals, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent.

  • Principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms.

  • Component and tool design, fixturing, printed circuit boards, schematics, and facility equipment.

  • Machine shop equipment like a mill, lathe, drill press, welder and inspection equipment.

  • Engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture.

  • Experience working in diverse teams, collaborating on designs from rough sketches with minimal guidance from a senior level technicians.

  • Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an Associate’s Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and AutoDesk Inventor

  • Knowledge of CREO

  • Knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and policies applicable to facility design, operations, and maintenance

  • DOE Experience

Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
