What You Will Do
Come join a new team of staff that will be working to organize, digitize, and catalog one of the most mission-critical physical collections at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). You will be on a new team, deployed to the Weapons Production Directorate, working for the Weapons Research Services- Secure Information Services Group. The information you organize, digitize, and catalog will have an immediate impact to the Laboratory’s mission.
You will be working in coordination with one of the largest libraries in the Federal Government, the National Security Research Center (NSRC). The NSRC is LANL’s classified library, containing tens of millions of documents, films, books, and other archival material related to the development, testing and production of nuclear weapons, dating back to the first days of the Manhattan Project. The NSRC's collections contain a breadth of classified technical information related to physics, chemistry, engineering, material science, intelligence, and national security.
Library Professional 1 $58,000-$90,800
As a Library Professional 1 you will digitize the Weapons Production’s physical collections. This will include Archiving media such as paper, microfilm, microfiche, motion picture film, video, and others. You will also enter metadata and indexing information about the digitized material that will be used to develop a robust catalog, provide Quality Control for the digitized materials, and upload digitized material and associate catalog information into the Online Vault database. You will also assist the Archivistaccession new material into the NSRC's collections and assist with customer research requests.
Library Professional 2 $71,000-$112,500
As a Library Professional 2 you will digitize the Weapon’s Production’s physical collections. The archival media includes paper, microfilm, microfiche, motion picture film, video, and others.This will include creating metadata/indexing information and a robust catalog in collaboration with the NSRC Digital Collections Team Leader and NSRC Chief Librarian to assist in the retrieval of the material. You will provide quality control for the digitized materials as well as the metadata and indexing and upload digitized material and associate catalog information into the Online Vault database. You will independently accession new material into the NSRC's collections and provide research librarian support to customers. This will also include actively seeking out improvements to digitization process looking to prove efficiency in the process and suggest them to leaders and develop extensive knowledge of the Weapons Production’s collections for aiding customers in finding mission critical information quickly. You will learn and implement a machine learning and artificial intelligence tool to efficiently catalog the collection as well as provide mentoring and training to less senior staff.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Library Professional Level 1
Experience in operating at least one professional digitizing equipment for either paper, microfilm, microfiche, video, or other media. Experience in populating indices for small to moderate size collections. Experience in populating metadata for archival materials. Demonstrated self-starter with the ability to work independently without direct supervision. Strong attention to detail.
Experience in customer-focused communication and relations. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to work in a team environment.
Additional Requirements for Library Professional 2:
Demonstrated experience in operating multiple professional digitizing equipment for various media types, such as paper, microfilm, microfiche, video, or other media. Experience in developing indices of moderate to large collections. Experience in creating metadata standards for archival materials. Experience in developing a robust catalog that meets the research needs of the weapons production customer.
Experience handling sensitive situations, using sound and independent judgement. Experience supporting customer requests and managing priorities and deadlines. Experience in the creation and maintenance of finding aids, service guides, usage instructions, and research tools to support learning and research.
Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists is preferred.
Education/Experience for Library Professional 1:
This position requires a Master’s in Degree Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association and 2 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. An American Library Association (ALA) accredited MLS degree; or a Master’s degree specializing in archives management, records management, or a related degree is preferred.
Education/Experience for Library Professional 2:
This position requires a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association and 5 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. An American Library Association (ALA) accredited MLS degree; or a Master’s degree specializing in archives management, records management, or a related degree is preferred.
Understanding of the weapons program within LANL, along with experience working with classified material in a classified environment.
Experience working in a major archival organization, such as the National Archives and Records Administration, a museum, or a library with significant archival holdings. Experience assisting scientists and/or engineers search for relevant materials in a major university, government, or corporate library. Background in information technology, physics, chemistry, engineering, or material science. Experience with standard digital archival and library cataloging systems. Experience with standard bibliographic tools including bibliographic management software, and digital and print library services.Demonstrated experience in continuous learning to enhance knowledge and required skills.
Active DOE “Q” Clearance
Note to Applicants: This position requires occasional travel (1-2 times per year) to train on the digitizing equipment. A cover letter must be detailed and address all of the mandatory and desired job requirements. And writing samples should be uploaded with the application to be considered for the Library Professional 2 position.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
