Los Alamos National Laboratory Embedded Software Engineer (R&D Engineer 1/ 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Space Data Science & Systems Group (ISR‐3) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking qualified Embedded Software Engineers to participate in the execution of our portfolio of space and ground based programs. ISR-3 is an integral part of the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division, and has its core capabilities in software development, mission operations, data exploitation, data systems development and integration.
Embedded software aspects of the program areas involve some of the following general types of work. This work may be in support of low (hardware interface), mid, or high (application) level software development:
R&D; Engineer 1 ($80,100-$131,000)
Develop real-time embedded software following a rigorous software development process
Develop flight software for use on radiation-hardened processors to control, process, acquire, and distribute data from scientific satellite payloads
Develop embedded software for ground-based processors that simulate a satellite spacecraft/payload interface used during the development, testing, and integration of the satellite payload onto the spacecraft
Write device drivers to interface with custom in-house designed hardware
Assist with proposals of hardware/software solutions and evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the proposals
Contribute to the development of progress reports for the project leaders, sponsors, and assist with defining project plans and milestones
Contribute to continuous software process improvement
Extract and define software requirements from system level requirements
Enhance technical and professional expertise through training
R&D; Engineer 2 ($87,800-$144,800)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D; Engineer 2 responsibilities include:
Provide leadership and help mentor other team members
Develop Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and other system level requirements
Interface with end users, principle scientists, principle engineers, and fellow colleagues to understand payload requirements, deliverables and time-frames, coordinate resources, plan, track, and execute project plans
Contribute to peer review of others’ work across organizations or disciplines
Present results of work at programmatic meetings
Define overall embedded software architecture and interfaces between different software components
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated basic knowledge and experience in one or more of the following electrical engineering or computer science focus areas:
Embedded Systems Application Programming
Real-Time Operating Systems
Digital Logic Design
Operating System Design
Computer Processor Architectures and Design
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a team environment
Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in written and oral communications
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
In addition to the job requirements above, qualification of the R&D; Engineer 2 requires:
Four years of professional software development experience or two years’ experience with advanced degree
Demonstrated ability to present software engineering issues and status to peers and management
Experience in formal software development processes
Experience with the development, deployment and operation of sensors
Experience with laboratory and/or field use of instruments
Experience with satellite sensors and programs
Experience in large data‐set management and exploitation
VHDL or Verilog experience
Test benches for FPGA or ASIC based design
Python programming experience
Experience estimating task completion effort
Experience with formal test plan development and test execution including unit testing and functional testing
Experience with remote sensing, digital image/signal processing techniques, and basic geography concepts such as map projections
Active "Q" Clearance
BS degree in engineering or related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program is required. Higher-level degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience is desired.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
