What You Will Do
The successful candidate will be a member of the DC & Pulsed Power (DC&PP) team and will perform technical installation and/or maintenance functions supporting engineering activities for magnet power supplies, pulsed power equipment and injector HV equipment. The successful candidate will also be responsible for implementing, testing, repairing, and maintaining magnet power supply and pulsed power systems and equipment for the LANSCE Accelerator. Specific duties may include defining and designing the interface systems for new pulsed power and high current magnet power supplies. Specific duties include:
Defining the requirements
Managing the interfaces with other LANSCE teams
Preparing the conduct of engineering documentation
Leading the upgrades, and
Demonstrating performance in accordance with the requirements.
The successful applicant will also learn the mapping of new magnets for a variety of laboratory customers in the LANSCE magnet mapping lab and produce documentation of the results. The team supports magnet power supply systems that provide up to 1 MW of power to LANSCE magnets and high voltage systems that deliver mega-ampere currents for short duration and continuous duration high-voltage systems operating at 750 kV. The applicant will work closely with engineers and other technicians to design circuits and produce schematics, diagrams, and layouts from rough sketches. The applicant will be responsible for building hardware and performing and documenting acceptance tests. The applicant will be expected to repair and maintain the existing systems and to use the accelerator operations maintenance database to track existing system performance.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience performing installation, maintenance, commissioning and repairs on complex electrical equipment and systems.
Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: 1) safe troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining pulsed power systems; 2) troubleshooting, and maintaining electrical equipment powered by 480VAC and 208VAC facility power; or 3) troubleshooting and maintaining high- current magnet power supplies up to 2500 A and 780 kW.
Demonstrated experience fabricating, assembling, and testing electronic systems.
Demonstrated experience using oscilloscopes and voltmeters.
Demonstrated ability to read and create schematics with AutoCAD or similar program.
Ability to collaborate with facility representatives and other groups and teams to support safety/reliability of equipment and systems.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team environment.
Ability to complete Forklift training and license.
Ability to complete and obtain incidental crane certification
Ability to provide after-hours primary “on-call” support for the DC&PP Team approximately one week out of six weeks.
Ability to obtain a “Q” Clearance which generally requires U.S. Citizenship
Demonstrated experience programming and troubleshooting micro programmable logic controllers.
Demonstrated experience safely troubleshooting and maintaining high-voltage systems operating at up to 50 kV.
Experience with leading, planning, coordinating and interfacing with people and equipment outside of the team. Experience installing, and commissioning of equipment upgrades for larger power electrical systems.
Experience with accelerator operations, equipment/systems, and maintenance.
Skill in the preparation and presentation of systems/equipment reporting.
Knowledge of Conduct of Operations and Conduct of Research principles and procedures.
Experience with troubleshooting and repair of legacy mechanical relay logic-based control and interlock systems.
Experience with making high reliability, multi- kiloampere DC electrical connections.
Experience with mapping magnets, collecting data, and generating reports to document the results of the magnet testing. Experience in problem solving, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting systems and/or equipment.
Education/Experience: Position require an Associates’ Degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification may be expected.

Where You Will Work
The Accelerator Operations and Technology – Radio Frequency Engineering (AOT‐RFE) Group provides expertise, support, and technical leadership in all aspects of RF engineering including gridded tube amplifiers and klystrons as well as RF control systems and RF accelerator cavities. AOT‐RFE’s primary focus is the design, and implementation of RF systems for the LANSCE User Facility. This includes participation in current and future projects. AOT’s secondary focus is to share its expertise and experience with organizations within the Laboratory as well as external partners and sponsors. Along these lines, AOT‐RFE has worked on national accelerator and global security projects utilizing its knowledge base while incorporating cutting edge technology.
