Los Alamos National Laboratory Engineering Manager 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Fire Protection Engineering Group (ES-FP) is looking for an Engineering Manager 3 with Fire Protection Engineering experience to become part of the multi-disciplinary organization supporting site wide Fire Protection Program at LANL. The position will be responsible for providing first line management and technical leadership, strategic and tactical planning, personnel and resource management and administration, performance appraisals and salary management, technical planning, group budgeting/accounting, fiscal planning, staff planning, implementation and enforcement of safety and security requirements.

The Level 3 Engineering Manager for ES-FP will manage a team of Fire Protection Engineers, Inspectors, program managers and Fire Alarm Specialists to ensure the needs of the organization are met and will qualify as a Fire Protection Engineer.

Additionally the engineering manager will serve as the back-up for the group leader, representing ES-FP and the Fire Marshal to interfacing groups within LANL and external to LANL including the NNSA/DOE Field Office, Los Alamos Fire Department and other vendors and customers.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate problem-solving among diverse technical teams and resolve conflict to ensure that effective decisions are reached and implemented.

  • Demonstrated successful experience leading a team to meet the formal, rigorous requirements and standards established in the nuclear, petrochemical, aerospace, defense, pharmaceutical or similar industry.

  • Demonstrated experience representing a fire protection/life safety organization on cross-discipline safety and operations teams for the purposes of improving facility operations and safety, including participation on authorization basis document development teams, multi-discipline facility assessment teams, and in support of facility/operational readiness reviews.

  • Demonstrated ability in critically evaluating fire protection needs and concerns in varied areas of research and development environments to solve complex problems through compromise when necessary and appropriate.

  • In depth knowledge of Fire Protection engineering concepts, building construction, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards (especially NFPA 1, 13, 14, 20, 25, 30, 45, 72, 101 and 801, IBC/IFC, AGS-010 and similar requirements documents), DOE specific requirements DOE O 420.1c, DOE STD 1066 and Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements associated with fire protection program implementation, and Highly Protected Risk (HPR) criteria such as FM Global and/or GE-Gap (Industrial Risk Insurers), Underwriters Laboratories and other NRTL listings/approvals used in highly protected risk construction.

  • Ability to be qualified to the LANL Fire Protection Engineering qualification standard.

  • Highly skilled in understanding, validating and resolving regulatory compliance issues within the context of a safety management program.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical direction and mentoring to fire protection professional staff members for the purposes of completing organizational-defined responsibilities and tasks, staff skill set development, and assisting with setting priorities on and improving the quality of technical deliverables.

  • Experience with the design, operation, commissioning and maintenance of fire protection and life safety systems and features.

  • Management experience.

Education:

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering or other Engineering Discipline and 5-6 years of relevant experience

Desired Qualifications:

Professional certifications including registration as a Professional Engineer (PE), NICET certifications; SFPE Professional; etc.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
