Los Alamos National Laboratory Eulerian Codes Group Leader (R&D Manager 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Are you looking for an opportunity to contribute as a Group Leader? Are you interested in making a difference in Computational Physics for the Laboratory’s Weapons Program? If you answered “yes” to these questions we encourage you to learn more about this phenomenal opportunity to be a scientific leader within the X Computational Physics (XCP) Division’s Eulerian Codes (XCP-2) group.

As a Group Leader, you would be responsible for the scientific direction of the team, delivering high-quality science while maintaining an active research program that aligns with the group mission. The technical focus of areas in XCP-2 include production code development and user support plus research & development in various numerical aspects of integrated multi-physics codes such as hydrodynamics (especially Eulerian Adaptive Mesh Refinement methods), materials, high explosives, radiation transport, high energy density physics, large-scale parallel programming, and applied computer science.

You will help to manage a large research portfolio across multiple technical areas and multiple programmatic sponsors. Your teams will work in close partnership with teams from across the Laboratory, including computer science, theoretical research, weapon design, and global security. The research and analysis work of XCP-2 supports a variety of Laboratory missions, including stockpile stewardship, inertial confinement fusion design and analysis, and global security assessments.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Computational Physics Expertise

You will need to have a documented broad technical knowledge in one or more computational physics areas relevant to XCP-2, supported by publications, presentations, computer code, or other evidence of completed work.

Talent Acquisition and Growth

To succeed in this role, you will need to have experience recruiting for and staffing programsto help buildtechnical capabilities within a team.Along with recruitment you must have experience successfully mentoring junior staff.

Leadership and Collaboration

You must have astrong collaborative and relationship-building skills that drive a creative and positive work environment with a demonstrated ability to lead with integrity and decisiveness towards institutional goals.

Communication

It is important that you havedemonstrated the ability to effectively present technical work and concepts to others, including lay audiences.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.PhD in science or engineering in a specialization relevant to XCP-2 is strongly preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

Vision for XCP-2

We would like it if you had a strategic, creative, and innovative scientific leadership approach in building teams and analyzing problems relevant to national security.

Additionally, we would really like to see a vision for program development (beyond the Advanced Simulation and Computing Integrated Codes Program) to support and enhance the capabilities of the group.

LANL Weapons Physics Specific

It would be nice if you had knowledge of LANL line management/program management interactions and roles & responsibilities, plus knowledge of the activities, needs, and workflow of the nuclear weapons physics applications community.

Computational Physics Community

It would be great if you have citations, honors, and/or participation in national committees in one or more computational physics areas relevant to XCP-2.

Multi-Physics Codes

It would be a plus if you had demonstrated knowledge of multi-physics codes, including their strengths, weaknesses, and long-term needs.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
