Los Alamos National Laboratory Fire Protection Designer (Engineering Technologist 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Contribute to a dynamic team of facility engineering professionals that provide engineering solutions across a wide variety of buildings at one of the most important research facilities in the world. Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an enthusiastic senior level Fire Protection Designers.

Working as part of a growing, fast-paced team, the successful candidate will be responsible for creating detailed three-dimensional system designs and perform hydraulic calculations for water-based fire suppression systems using hydraulic design software. The successful candidate will perform a vital role as part of a lab-wide effort to maintain facility compliance in fire safety; produce documentation of existing fire suppression systems; and record drawings and calculations. Regular functions will include but not limited to: Visits to facilities to evaluate existing conditions; identifying and documenting fire suppression deficiencies; and providing hydraulically calculated designs for new facilities, additions, renovations and repairs.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expert knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design, three-dimensional (3D) model generation, including the application of industry codes and standards governing fire protection in buildings.

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding in applying hydraulic design principles to address complex and unique water supply and fuel load challenges.

  • Fully Capable of providing and evaluating cost estimates for design effort.

  • Proven/demonstrated ability and or experienced in providing technical solutions to complex and/or unique problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity and independence. Solutions are frequently original and impact the outcome of the entire project. Usually includes some responsibility for coordination and participation in developing the final product.

  • Demonstrated experience working directly with customers to consult; representing the organization; and defining scope.

  • Experienced performing drawing checks.

  • Experienced in evaluating potential design changes to eliminate future problems. Incorporates lessons learned into standard details and practices.

  • Ability to manage and mentor several junior designers.

Education/Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability/experienced producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes.

  • Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures.

  • Highly proficient with AutoSPRINK hydraulic modeling software.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
