Los Alamos National Laboratory Fire Protection Engineer (Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for an enthusiastic mid-level Fire Protection Engineer to join its Engineering Services- Fire Protection Engineering Group (ES-FP). ES-FP provides institutional oversight, leadership, and technical resources for safe, high quality, and cost-effective fire protection systems and programs in support of LANL operations.

We are looking for a dedicated professional who will act as a key contributor by fully applying and interpreting industry standard principles, tools, and technologies within fire protection. In this role, you will lead and or assist senior fire protection staff with the planning, design review, and analysis of fire suppression system designs and calculations, including sprinkler, fire pump, fire alarm, and mass notification systems; review and approve fire protection system design; provide analysis of existing facilities for code compliance; and review LANL construction projects to ensure compliance with LANL and nationally recognized codes and standards.

Fire Protection Engineer 2 ($94,100 - $155,700)

The Engineer 2 will perform building, fire code, and fire hazard analyses and prepare engineering evaluation documents for LANL facilities and construction projects. The on-site fire protection system evaluations will analyze life safety requirements for new and existing buildings subject to renovations, including building code compliance, occupancy determination, occupant load calculations, and egress analysis. You will also interface with facility project personnel, including other engineering disciplines to coordinate project designs, daily facility support and fire protection program implementation activities.

Fire Protection Engineer 3 ($103,500 - $172,800)

In addition to what was outlined above, at this level, the Engineer 3 will help mitigate and or reduce fire consequences— loss of life, personal injury, property damage, etc.— by applying engineering fundamentals; conducting research; and performing fire hazard analyses and fire hazard evaluations, with respect to detection and suppression of fires. In doing so you, you will apply advanced and broad knowledge of industry technical codes, standards, and practices to ensure DOE liabilities are protected from inherent risks of fire. Experience working with and application of Code of Federal Regulations and DOE orders pertaining to fire protection and fire protection programs is central to this position.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

In order to be considered for this position, you must exhibit sound knowledge of Fire Protection:

  • Principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and appropriate standards.

  • Systems and calculations, applications of fire protection methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.

  • Work planning and control methods.

  • Maintenance techniques and construction methodologies; and

  • Working knowledge of project and process fire protection practices.

Accordingly, the successful candidate will possess:

  • Proven Experience applying fire protection concepts to the design, operation, commissioning and maintenance of fire protection and life safety systems and features.

  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge of, or the ability to learn and apply Fire Protection engineering concepts, building construction, National Fire Protection, Association (NFPA) codes and standards (especially NFPA 1, 10, 13, 14, 20, 25, 30, 45, 72, 101 and 801), and Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements associated with fire protection program implementation.

  • Skill, or ability to learn and apply Highly Protected Risk (HPR) criteria; including knowledge of FM Global and/or GE-Gap (Industrial Risk Insurers), Underwriters Laboratories and other NRTL listings/approvals used in commercial construction and HRP facilities.

  • Proven skill in providing technical analysis and report writing.

  • Skill or ability to assist in the development, review, and maintenance of Fire Hazard Analyses (FHAs) and other technical evaluation documents with senior mentorship.

  • Strong ability to interpret and apply the Life Safety Code for new construction and renovations to existing facilities.

Additional Job Requirements for Fire Protection Engineer 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires advanced to expert experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, including demonstrated ability in leading all aspects of the requirements above, and that of the Fire Protection Engineer 2 position

Education/Experience at Level 2: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Education/Experience at Level 3: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.

  • Working knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.

  • Experience with implementing/ oversight of a DOE Fire Protection Program at the site wide level.

  • Familiar with fire sprinkler system hydraulic calculations and be able to read/evaluate hydraulic calculations from various programs.

  • Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

  • Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT); current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred.
