Los Alamos National Laboratory Fire Protection Engineering Technologist (Engineering Technologist 1) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Fire Protection Engineering Group (ES-FP) is expanding and looking for an Engineering Technologist 1. The ES-FP group provides institutional leadership, processes, and technical resources for safe, high quality, and cost-effective fire protection systems, programs and response organizations in support of LANL operations. This position will work with a team of engineering professionals responsible primarily for LANL facility and site design and analysis work and review of LANL construction projects to ensure compliance with LANL and nationally recognized codes and standards.

In this role, you will assist senior fire protection personnel with the analysis, design, and modification of fire protection systems and calculations, including sprinkler, fire pump, fire alarm, and mass notification systems. The Engineer Tech 1 will assist in fire protection product/system/equipment design, development and/or production processes. They will perform detailed reviews of drawings and provide technical direction to ensure design outputs meet project objectives and governing requirements.

The Engineer Tech 1 will use and apply fire protection requirements, principles, theories, concepts and techniques to perform operational technical support and maintenance work and analysis of fire system/equipment problems. After troubleshooting equipment failures and operational deficiencies, they assist with technical research and gatherings data needed to provide resolutions to moderately complex problems.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge/experience of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling, and design.

  • Basic knowledge of mathematical formulas and computations and data gathering methods.

  • Basic knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.

  • Awareness of fire protection engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities, including design and systems technology.

  • Awareness of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the fire protection engineering discipline.

Education Required: Fire Protection ENG TECH 1 Position typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering Technology or other technical fields; or an Associate’s degree in a related field and 2 years of relevant experience preferred.

This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

Work Environment: Outdoors, in confined space, irregular schedule, working off-shift/rotating schedule, operation of motor vehicles, work in a noisy environment, work under unusual lighting conditions, work near sources of ionizing radiation, work near sources of non-ionizing radiation, headgear or head protection, safety glasses or eye protection, hearing protection, gloves or hand protection, safety shoes or protective foot gear.
