Los Alamos National Laboratory Global Ocean Modeling Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do_

The COSIM team seeks applications from diverse candidates with expertise in global, coastal or regional ocean modeling to work on any of a wide range of scientific and computational physics problems. The position would be a combination of two topics. The first is the design, implementation and validation of improved mesoscale-eddy mixing parameterizations in global ocean models. The second topic could be chosen from numerous topics relevant to E3SM including scientific investigations, model development, or algorithm design. The specific choice depends on the overlay of the candidate’s interests and skills with available projects.

The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team developing an innovative approaches for conducting grand-challenge computations of the earth system. Results from this work will be presented in conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.

What You Need

Desired Skills: The successful candidate needs to have experience in the broad fields of computational physics, ocean modeling, and/or climate modeling. We seek candidates with diverse research experience with a preference for individuals with one or more of the following: experience in construction and application of physical models; programming expertise; the analysis and incorporation of data and observations for model development and testing; scientific investigations using coupled climate models. The candidate will have also demonstrated scientific excellence as evidenced by submission and publication of authored publications in refereed journals, and/or the ability to create or improve computational software (especially in open source contexts as measurable via open-source contributions). The ability to work in a highly collaborative team setting is also a requirement.

Education: A Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computational science, physics, earth sciences, fluid dynamics, climate modeling, civil engineering, geophysics, or a closely related field, completed within the past five years or soon to be completed.

Notes to Applicants: In addition to applying on-line, please send a curriculum vitae_, digitized copies of transcripts, names of three references, and a one-page cover letter detailing qualifications, research interests, and proposed research directions to Mark Petersen, mpetersen@lanl.gov. Please include “Ocean Modeling 2018 Post-doc Search” in the email subject line. Applications will be reviewed as received.

Additional Details:

Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Candidates may be considered for a Director's Postdoc Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Richard P. Feynman, Darleane Christian Hoffman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Distinguished Postdoc Fellowships.

Where You Will Work_

Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The 2-3 year postdoc position is within the Climate, Ocean and Sea-Ice Modeling (COSIM) Team that develops advanced ocean and ice models for the study of climate and climate change, e.g., the Model for Prediction Across Scales Ocean (MPAS-Ocean) within the Department of Energy’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). A particular focus of E3SM is fully-coupled, global, high-resolution simulations of the Earth system. Within this broad activity, the focus of the Los Alamos National Laboratory the role of ocean mesoscale eddies in the climate system, and the role of the ocean and ice systems in the carbon cycle and sea-level rise.
