Los Alamos National Laboratory Graduate Student in Explosives Science & Technology in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The High Explosives Science & Technology group is seeking a graduate student candidate intern to perform experimental research on explosives in the general fields of materials science, chemistry, engineering or physics. The work has potential for publications in physics and chemistry journals as well as applications in projects with national security missions. Although the position is mainly experimental, the candidate will have opportunities for advanced simulation and computing if desired.

Explosive Science & Technology GRA students support LANL projects in a wide range of project areas including, but not limited to:

  • Development and testing of new inert and explosive composites and/or molecules;

  • Microstructural characterization of plastic-bonded explosives using a variety of standard and cutting edge techniques;

  • Synthesis of novel organic explosive molecules;

  • Building and firing detonation experiments;

  • Advanced manufacturing of explosives; and

  • Connecting thermal, mechanical or explosive experimental data to new models and/or simulations.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in any Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or Physics (or related) discipline.

  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent).

  • Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Desired Qualifications:

Students selected for GRA internships in High Explosives Science & Technology are most competitive when they possess the following knowledge and skills:

  • Familiarity with organic chemistry and properties of molecules and molecular crystals;

  • Familiarity with composites manufacturing, characterization and testing;

  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams in a scientific setting;

  • Experience working with hazardous materials;

  • Computer programming (Python, C++, etc.) in support of scientific or engineering applications;

  • Familiarity with scientific research methods and data demonstrated by completed coursework or previous research

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context; and

  • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.

Education/Experience: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or Physics (or related) discipline.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
