Los Alamos National Laboratory Information System Security Officer (Cybersecurity Technical Staff 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

We are seeking a creative and highly motivated Information System Security Officer (ISSO) to join our collaborative and dynamic team! The ISSO will work on a portfolio of exciting, challenging, and cutting-edge scientific and national security space missions. ISR-3 is an integral part of the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and has core capabilities in software development, mission operations, data exploitation, data systems development and integration.

ISR Division has been designing, building, and operating highly innovative ground, air and space-based measurement and detection systems for over 60 years. We solve some of the most challenging scientific and national security problems facing the world today. Our interdisciplinary teams of engineers, technicians, and scientists work, learn, and succeed through a highly creative and dynamic R&D environment. We lead experiments on NASA missions, including the Perseverance and Curiosity Rovers, Van Allen Probes, and IBEX as well as the upcoming IMAP Mission, NACHOS hyperspectral CubeSat, and BEAMPIE rocket experiment. We also build, fly, operate and analyze data from measurement systems deployed to space for verification of international nuclear treaties, anddevelop innovative sensors, ground, airborne, and space hardware/software systems for basic scientific missions, nuclear nonproliferation, space situational awareness and remote sensing.

Aspects of the program area involves the following types of work:

  • Assist management in developing and implementing the overall cybersecurity posture of the classified computing systems within ISR Division and its parent organization, the Global Security Directorate

  • Coordinate work on significant and/or complex cyber issues requiring analysis and interpretation of potential solutions and associated data

  • Represent and advocate for an effective classified computing security posture to Laboratory upper management and oversight bodies in both DOE and DoD accreditation domains

  • Identify, develop, and implement solutions for known threats to classified computing environments

  • Evaluate and recommend new software tools and packages for possible inclusion in the security software stack

  • Lead or participate in reviews, assessments, security plans, and publications relevant to the classified security systems

  • Work across Los Alamos and with oversight agencies on security system management and testing.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following disciplines: cyber security, information security, information assurance, computer science or engineering

  • Effective interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to work within a team environment, and oral and written communication skills

  • Advanced knowledge of one or more of the following:

  • Distributed systems, including system architectures, computer networks, and software

  • Classic and emerging cyber threats and vulnerabilities and demonstrated ability to apply that knowledge to risk evaluation as well as mitigation strategies through system engineering, analytics, and/or operations

  • Measurement tools for vulnerability assessment, detection and mitigation

  • NIST informa ti on security policies and procedures.

  • Experience implementing standard NIST controls, risk assessments, and contingency planning activities.

  • Experience developing strong, cooperative working relationships with cyber security stakeholders. Experience with cyber readiness audits and inspections.

  • Passion for learning and developing creative solutions within a dynamic, technically challenging work environment.

Education/Experience : This position requires a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in a technical field and a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Linux system experience

  • Knowledge and experience working with classified computing systems

  • CISSP or other professional cyber security certification

  • Active "Q" Clearance

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
