What You Will Do
The Pit Technologies Machining Group (PT-2) is seeking skilled and talented mechanical engineers or machining engineers. PT-2 requires innovative engineers with expertise and experience in manufacturing, CNC machining, programming, tooling design, and process engineering.R&D Engineer 3 (Machining Process Engineer)
The successful candidate will provide technical support as the process/system engineer in developing processes, improving processes, troubleshooting, and manufacturing support. The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting operations as needed to maintain equipment and ensure the operability of manufacturing processes. Responsible for identifying process improvements and leading development activities within the Plutonium Facility (PF-4). Individuals working in this position will be interacting with multiple organizations to ensure compliance with Conduct of Operations, Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, Quality, and Safety Management programs.Serve as a contributing member of the R&D and Operations teams to address engineering challenges.

Contribute at a fully-functioning level to the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D and Operations initiatives.
Develop new methods, technologies, and analysis techniques for institutional programs.
Ensure programmatic objectives through the provision of project management and engineering support to successfully complete milestones.
Mentor early career staff, postdocs, and students.
Independently present specific aspects of engineering assignments at project meetings.
Adapt to evolving R&D requirements while meeting safety, security, compliance, and schedule imperatives.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Thorough technical knowledge of modern precision machining methods and proven ability to provide technical leadership for mechanical operations and testing (e.g. digital manufacturing, high tolerance precision machine design/integration, multi-component assemblies; characterization; and multi-parameter testing).
Thorough knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: mechanical engineering; manufacturing engineering; machining engineering or other relevant fields.
Thorough knowledge of and experience in designing; planning; and executing research and development R&D projects.
Leadership and Management
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in implementing Laboratory objectives and other statements of policy, practice, and/or procedure.
Enhance technical and professional expertise of a junior staff through active mentoring and training.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in implementing Laboratory policies affecting research and development activities, projects, and/or initiatives.
Influence organizational, project, and program strategies and directions. Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives.
Leads the development of technical products such as journal papers, reports, presentations, and concept papers. Develops intellectual property and contributes to professional societies, publications, copyrights, and external collaborations, and/or patents. May contribute to technology transfer.
Contributes ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. Leads development of technical section of small to moderate proposals.
Attains additional certifications, qualifications, and/or recognitions to grow in field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Education and Experience
Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from and ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Demonstrated technical knowledge of current and legacy stockpile weapon designs.
Demonstrated technical knowledge of CNC machine tools.
Demonstrated technical knowledge and experience with computer-aided design modeling (e.g. ProE, Solid Works or CREO) and tool path generation using Mastercam, Camworks, Gibbs, or other methods to facilitate the integration of models into CNC machine language.
Demonstrated technical achievement through publication in peer reviewed forums.
Knowledge of NQA-1 or QC-1 quality requirements.
Knowledge of the TA-55/PF-4 safety and authorization basic requirements.
Knowledge of existing NNSA/DOE requirements related to nuclear and high hazard facility operations.
Demonstrated successful application of Six-Sigma principles.
Experience working in gloveboxes or atmosphere controlled boxes and installation of equipment into a nuclear facility.
Existing DOE “Q” clearance (or equivalent).
