What You Will Do_

PF-LFS is seeking interested candidates that will provide machining support for the fabrication of components both in a classified and unclassified environment.

The successful candidate will:_

  • Work in a team environment to provide fabrication services for a variety of customers both internal and external to the Laboratory including: Hydrotesting; JTA; Subcrit; LEP; production (NCD); Threat Reduction programs; Pu Sustainment/Pit Manufacturing; Pit Surveillance; and Pu Science Campaign.

  • Produce fabrications ranging in size from miniature to very large, which will include common materials as well as materials with radioactive, toxic, pyrophoric, and/or other hazardous characteristics.

  • Work from complex drawings, sketches, and/or verbal instructions to facilitate the manufacture of parts and assemblies by programming, setting up, and operating manual and CNC mills and lathes, EDM and a variety of general machine shop tooling.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications, which utilize Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T;) symbols, and determine design factors such as size, shape, position, and arrangement of features and parts comprising assemblies.

  • Ability to perform precision measurements.

  • Ability to create manufacturing drawings or sketches for the production of hardware and to analyze and troubleshoot customer provided drawings and provide recommendations for revision to ensure manufacturability.

  • Ability to develop specifications for project implementation and for verifying that the end product meets requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to produce parts with a high degree of difficulty and tight tolerances, typically +/- .0005.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in communication and teaming with peers, customers, and technicians as appropriate to achieve or negotiate work requirements.

  • Knowledge of conventional, CNC, and advanced manufacturing techniques.

  • Ability to operate manual and powered lifting equipment/devices.

  • Must be willing to work with hazardous materials.

Desired Skills:

  • Applicant must currently hold, or have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.

  • RADWORKER training and certification.

  • Experience with machining materials having RAD, toxic, pyrophoric, explosive, and/or other hazardous characteristics.

  • Welding and sheet metal fabrication experience.

  • CAD/CAM experience, preferably SolidWorks/CAMWorks and Pro-E/Pro-M.

Education Required:

  • Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent AND

  • Accredited journey-person qualification OR program-qualified equivalency consisting of 15 years of experience in any machine trade discipline, with 5-8 years of this experience to include both manual and CNC set up and operation. Must have at least 2 years in a prototype fabrication environment.

  • Certificate or associates degree preferred.

Candidates selected for interview should be prepared to describe the difficulty, materials, and tolerances of recently completed fabrication work. Interviews for this position will include a proficiency “segment” in which applicants will be asked to review and comment on actual fabrication drawings, describing the approach and/or potential difficulties, and describing inspection and measurement techniques needed. The candidate will also be asked to identify typical maintenance needs, and describe safe work practices in a machine shop environment.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Located across multiple technical areas across the Laboratory, PF manages a diverse machine tooling capability and resources necessary for fabrication and manufacturing in support of multiple programs while adhering to Lab, federal, DOE and state requirements.
