Los Alamos National Laboratory Mechanical Designer\Drafter (Designer/Drafter 4/5 ) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Working in the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Mechanical and Thermal Engineering (E-1) Group, the selected applicant will be expected to use their extensive knowledge of mechanical design to solve problems for an interesting, diverse and complex array of projects.

This position will be filled at either the Designer\Drafter 4 or 5 level, depending on the credentials of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Mechanical Designer\Drafter (Designer\Drafter 4) ($64,400 - $102,300)

Successful applicants will perform the following duties in this position:

  • Use Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to capture complex mechanical engineering designs

  • Generate complete design packages for complex mechanical assemblies\systems and resolve design package issues

  • Define modeling structure for large, complex design projects

  • Apply engineering design principles to design and guide the fabrication of complex and/or non-standard components and assemblies

Senior Mechanical Designer\Drafter (Designer\Drafter 5) ($77,300 - $126,000)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this levelthe successful applicant will:

  • Lead small project teams

  • Perform complex calculations in support of engineering design

  • Interact with all levels of personnel, customers and management

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to assemble complete design packages for complex mechanical assemblies\systems

  • Demonstrated ability to expertly use SolidWorks and/or Creo CAD software packages to generate models, assemblies and drawings for complex mechanical designs

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while supporting a collaborative environment with coworkers having different technical backgrounds

  • Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written presentations and reports

Additional Job Requirements for Senior Mechanical Designer\Drafter (Designer\Drafter 5):

  • Demonstrated ability to lead small project teams, providing technical leadership and oversight in planning and execution

  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex calculations in support of unique mechanical design solutions

  • Experience interacting with all levels of personnel and customers, with demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple tasks under strict deadlines and changing priorities

Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 5 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 7 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • SolidWorks Simulation, Creo Simulate or other engineering analysis software experience

  • Product data management (PDM) user/administrator experience

  • GD&T certification

  • Experience designing for additive manufacturing

  • An active Department of Energy Q clearance

  • Active DOE or DOD security clearance

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
