Los Alamos National Laboratory Metals Manufacturing (Research Technologist 1) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Deformation Processing Team is seeking a research technologist to join the Team in support of a wide variety of metals forming and heat treating projects. The Deformation Processing Team works on metals forming and heat treating projects using rolling mills, hydraulic presses, vacuum heat treating furnaces, and laser powder bed metal additive manufacturing machines. We support a wide variety of programs with an emphasis on identifying creative solutions to meet our customer’s needs. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively on both independent projects or as part of a team to assist on projects in metal forming including developing solid models and drawings using CAD. The role will also include hands-on work including deep drawing, forging, rolling, wire drawing & swaging, and heat treating of metals and alloys. Previous experience in one of the above areas is strongly desired, but is not required.In this position you will help develop new procedures, processes or specifications to perform work on a variety of tasks and projects and will be expected to work with a minimum amount of supervision. Common tasks for this job include:

  • Create solid models, engineering technical drawings and coordinate associated machining actives

  • Develop and assemble mechanical hardware, test assemblies, and experimental fixtures

  • Operate vacuum heat treatment furnace systems, rolling mills and hydraulic presses

  • Perform routine maintenance of furnaces, vacuum systems, water lines, and hydraulic systems including maintaining supplies for the equipment in these areas

  • Hands-on work in a radiological controlled area

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Hands on experience with metalworking or other fabrication skills

  • Experience creating and working from solid models or engineering drawings using solid modeling software such as Creo, Soildworks, NX, Catia, etc.

  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as a member of a team

  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications and PC computer operations

  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, especially contributing to technical reports or publications.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Competence in common programming languages (R, Python, C++, etc…)

  • Ability to create CAD/CAM files (such as Camworks, MasterCam, etc.) and G&M code

  • Experience with PLC or other HMI controls and program development

  • Experience designing and assembling mechanical hardware and applying engineering concepts to mechanical designs.

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment and/or with common fabrication tools (waterjet, lathe, mill, welding, 3D printing/additive manufacturing, etc.)

  • Significant hands on experience in deep drawing, forging, rolling, wire drawing & swaging, and/or heat treating of metals and alloys and/or other fabrication techniques

  • Experience working with radiological materials or non-typical metal systems such as tantalum.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and careful work practices around industrial hazards.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
