What You Will Do
The Monte Carlo Methods, Codes, and Applications Group (XCP-3) of the X-Computational Physics Division is seeking early career scientists for research and development in our particle transport capabilities in support of the laboratory’s missions. We deliver first-principles Monte Carlo methods for radiation transport, production-quality codes, and transport-based computational and experimental assessments that cover an array of DOE missions, including stockpile stewardship, global nuclear security, and criticality safety.
Our expertise lies in developing production-quality radiation particle transport software and its applications. XCP-3 is responsible for LANL’s Monte Carlo radiation particle transport codes, MCNP® and MCATK. Our transport-based applications include simulations of experimental diagnostics, intrinsic radiation, radiation detection and measurement, criticality safety, nuclear threat reduction and response, radiation health protection, nuclear weapons effects, and nuclear forensics.
We are particularly interested in candidates that have specialized in nuclear instrumentation and development of detector response simulation capabilities. The successful candidate will be expected to continue fundamental or applied research in his/her areas of specialization as well as to support the national-security programs and mission of the Laboratory.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated record of scientific achievements in the fields Monte Carlo methods, algorithms, and software development for simulation of neutral and charged particle transport.
Effective written and oral communication skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
Experience with modern software development languages
Experience running large, parallel codes in a high-performance, UNIX computing environment.
Experience in modeling particle transport experiments and analysis/comparison of experimental data.
Experience with modern software development methodologies (such as Agile development, SCRUM, unit testing, continuous build & test, test driven development).
Experience with multi-core CPU, Intel XEON Phi, and/or GPU programming.
Education: A Ph.D. in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Astrophysics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Physics or a closely related field, completed within the last five years or soon to be completed.
