Los Alamos National Laboratory Nanomaterials Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Engineered Materials Group (MST-7) is searching for a motivated postdoctoral researcher with both an interest in addressing national security challenges and a strong background in nanomaterials synthesis and surface modification to engage in a dynamic multidisciplinary experimental research environment. Overall, research is motivated by the broad goal to discover, develop and apply colloidal nanomaterials in both semi-conducting and scintillating gamma-radiation detection schemes. The successful candidate will split their effort between these two research efforts, and will be expected to do this work in collaboration with a team of Ph.D. staff scientists, postdocs and students with expertise in the areas of single-nanostructure optical spectroscopy/imaging, theory/modeling, polymer chemistry, and gamma-radiation detector development.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Strong chemical synthesis skills using air-sensitive handling techniques applied to nanocrystal synthesis, manipulation and surface modification, in particular of semiconductor nanomaterials
A strong publication record
Excellent communication and writing skills
Demonstrated adherence to chemical/materials laboratory safety protocols, including the proper use of PPE
The candidate must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.
Nanocrystal-polymer composite synthesis
Nanocrystal shape control
Experience in developing inorganic-organic hybrid materials
Direct experience with semiconductor quantum dots
Optical and structural characterization techniques
Planning and execution of complex, multistep reactions
Education: Ph.D. in inorganic, organic or materials chemistry or related field completed within the last 5 years or soon to be completed.
Work Environment: Predominantly in a laboratory setting (complete with fume hoods and gloveboxes); work near sealed sources of ionizing radiation

Where You Will Work
Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns. The Materials Science and Technology (MST), Division provides world leading, innovative, and agile materials science and technology solutions for national security missions. Within MST, The Engineered Materials Group (MST-7) houses materials science expertise for national security needs in the areas of ultra-precision design and machining, polymer science and engineering, and materials characterization. The Materials Development Team applies innovative synthesis and manufacturing technologies to a variety of mission-relevant problems encompassing high energy density physics, global security, radiation detection, thermal management and renewable energy systems. The team often participates in high-risk/high-reward experimental research endeavors on exploratory topics in order to rapidly assess and advance the potential mission impacts and scalability of emergent materials technologies based on self-assembly, additive manufacturing, metallurgy, and other pertinent technical areas.
