Los Alamos National Laboratory Operational Assurance Specialist 1 (Chemical Management) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Chemical Management Program is evolving to improve the completeness, accuracy, and user-friendliness of the LANL chemical inventory database, and associated applications and functions. This position is an opportunity to investigate operational issues and help to devise sustainable structural solutions with real institutional benefit. As a member our team, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of activities pertaining to chemical management. Examples include but are not limited to: streamlining data input from vendors, working directly with our procurement division to improve the chemical purchasing experience, entering data from chemical purchase orders, providing feedback on software updates to ChemDB, conducting inventory spot checks in the field, developing training materials and guidance documents, and assisting with customer service tickets. You may also support a transition to RFID labelling.

Our goal in the Chemical Management Program is to provide excellent customer service by making it easy to do the right thing. This will require solutions that are imaginative, thorough, practical, and consistent with LANL mission objectives. The ideal candidate for this position is someone who is passionate about providing excellent customer service, stands up for worker safety, is not afraid to identify problems and take action, and is ready to hit the ground running and make a difference!

This position is part of an agile and cross-functional team with the 5-year goal of achieving 99.5% chemical inventory accuracy on random spot check.

The Operations Assurance Specialist 1 will primarily support chemical inventory data quality improvements. This will include site visits to areas where chemicals are received, stored, and disposed. Will be responsible for accurately recording chemical container information in the institutional software. May also provide customer service related to the program and/or the inventory software as needed. Process improvement is a key part of this role; we need someone who wants to find the “why” behind problems and then make it easy for customers to do the right thing.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Process improvement: User experience

Demonstrated experience working with users of inventory systems to diagnose problems and create workable solutions that can be sustained with minimal further intervention. Includes the entire process, from ordering and receiving through labelling and entry of inventory data to final disposition and tracking.

Data integration and analysis across multiple platforms

Comprehensive and detailed experience managing data streams that vary in type, purpose and format and that are located on diverse platforms of varying age. This includes purchase, order and delivery details, labelling and tracking, Safety Data Sheet and related worker health and safety data, and LANL-generated analysis and data.

Communication: Stakeholder analysis and support

Demonstrated ability to work across different organizations and responsibilities to define stakeholders, their roles in chemical management, logistics and inventory, and analyze their needs. Able to negotiate solutions to conflicting desires to reach effective and efficient resolution.

Proficiencies

Proficient in standard Microsoft Office software (Excel, Powerpoint, Word, etc.)

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in one or more of the following areas is desired:

Education

Position requires a minimum of 2 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Relevant experience

Experience working in a scientific laboratory where hazardous chemicals are used.

Experience working in a manufacturing environment involving hazardous chemicals

Logistics

Experience with business operations and supply chains, and the digital systems that make these work. Includes the physical and electronic processes needed for vendors to accept, process, deliver, and track orders.

Chemical management

Experience managing inventory data for commercial and/or laboratory chemicals, including purchasing, order and delivery details, labelling and tracking, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and related worker health and safety analysis.

Support of application development

Experience coordinating with analysts and developers working in software development, and familiarity with programming tools useful for prototyping solutions, such as MATLAB or Python. Also experience working in an agile scrum environment developing user requirements and test criteria. Familiarity with conceptual/wireframe designs of user interfaces for engaging with both users and developers.

Process Improvement

Experience working with and implementing process improvement methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma.

Customer service

Varied experience in achieving quality and performance objectives using a customer service model, emphasizing the importance of understanding the root cause of issues before taking action.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
