What You Will Do
The Weak Interactions Team in the Physics Division (P-1) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a post-doctoral appointment working on a search for double beta decay; a rare nuclear decay that can provide insight into the particle-antiparticle nature of the neutrino and the absolute mass scale of the neutrino. The successful candidate will contribute to the Team's efforts on the Majorana and LEGEND double-beta decay experiments. The Team is focused on analyzing Majorana data from an array of Ge detectors at the Sanford Underground Research Facility; and installation for the LEGEND experiment, a next generation double-beta decay experiment with initial experimental efforts in Gran Sasso, Italy.
Dynamic Imaging and Radiography (P-1) in the Physics Division is a diverse group of experimental physicists, engineers, technicians, and students engaged in a range of fundamental and applied research in: nuclear physics beyond the Standard Model, weapons physics, remote sensing, and fluid dynamics.Team membersspecialize in the application of state-of-the-art techniques in particle and light detection and the recording of transient events. We support a diverse program that includes scientists of many nationalities and backgrounds, participation in experiments worldwide, sponsorship of workshops and conferences, unclassified and classified experiments and analyses.
The LANL Postdoctoral Program is a pipeline for hiring technical staff at the Laboratory, many of whom first joined LANL as postdocs. The Laboratory encourages its postdoc mentors to help their postdocs explore possibilities for conversion to a permanent staff position.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
(1) The successful candidate must have an experimental background in one or more of the following areas: Nuclear physics, particle physics, simulation and analysis of nuclear-particle physics experiments, low background counting, or data acquisition. (2) Ability for significant travel, within pandemic constraints, to experimental sites is a necessity. (3) Strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications, presentations, and the candidates cover letter.
(1) Experience fielding experiments at underground facilities; (2) a strong publishing record, demonstrated written and oral communication skills in English; (3) familiarity with cryogenic systems; (4) familiarity with germanium detectors; (5) experience with weak interaction measurements.
A Ph.D. (completed in 2015 or later) in nuclear, particle physics, or astrophysics is required.
