Los Alamos National Laboratory Plasma Physics Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The P-24 Plasma Physics group in Physics Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct experimental research in the development of a novel magneto-inertial fusion architecture, at the Plasma Liner Experiment (PLX) facility. The candidate will join a small multi-institutional team pursuing an exciting and novel path towards the realization of fusion energy, and will have significant opportunities for impact and contribution to the success of the effort. As a group, P-24 supports a diverse portfolio of cutting-edge research in high-energy-density (HED) plasma physics and inertial-confinement fusion (ICF) in support of national security.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent and collaborative research in experimental plasma physics, as evidenced by at least one first-author paper published in a peer-reviewed journal.

  • Sound academic training in plasma physics.

  • Significant hands-on research experience in a laboratory environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate both technically and interpersonally both orally and in writing.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with design, construction and/or operation of plasma diagnostics.

  • Experience with maintaining/operating data-acquisition systems.

  • Experience with mechanical construction of laboratory plasma devices, hardware,electrical/electronic circuits, etc.

  • Experience with data analysis using software tools such as Matlab or Python/SciPy.

  • Familiarity withapproaches and challenges of controlled fusion, especially for fusion energy applications.

Education: A Ph.D. in experimental plasma physics or closely related discipline, earned within the last five years.
