Los Alamos National Laboratory Post Bachelors Student in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Come join the brightest minds at the most innovative R&D facility supporting our national security! CCS-2 is seeking recent graduates looking for a machine learning internship at the post-baccalaureate level. In this position, you will be provided with a mentor, a challenging project, and an opportunity to present their work to colleagues. The project will involve applying machine learning methods to choosing and analyzing group structures for deterministic neutron transport.

You will run the neutron transport code PARTISN for different group structures and analyze the results in Python using machine learning. Both PARTISN and the Python code will be run on the LANL High Performance Computing (HPC) machines.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

The successful candidate should have experience in:

  • Scientific computing and/or computational physics

  • Python or similar programming language

  • Software management (Git, CVS, etc.)

  • HPC machine environments (shells, running parallel jobs)

  • Debugging, trouble-shooting, and diagnosing software problems

  • Working collaboratively and building relationships in teams

  • Technical writing and presentations

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in:

  • Deterministic and/or Monte Carlo neutron transport

  • Radiation modeling software, such as PARTISN or MCNP

  • Developing parallel software

  • Machine learning software (such as scikit-learn)

Education :Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent science/engineering degree. Eligibility is limited to students who have completed a bachelor’s degree within the past 3 years, but have not been accepted and enrolled in a graduate program. The bachelor’s degree should have been completed with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
