Los Alamos National Laboratory Powder Materials Processing Postdoctoral Research Associate in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Powder Materials Processing Team is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher with experience in composite fabrication to obtain targeted enhancement of thermophysical properties; e.g. increased thermal conductivity or strength. Composite applications are specifically targeted at high temperature applications. Systems of interest range from fiber reinforced to chemical vapor infiltration methods. The candidate will have experience with composite theory design and have demonstrated enhanced targeted properties of a system. The ideal candidate will have experience with tailoring the composite architecture to achieve the desired effect.

The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Powder Materials Processing team in the Sigma Division, reporting to the Powder Materials Processing Team Leader. Our team works in diverse areas including powder analysis, powder synthesis, powder handling, and powder consolidation of a wide variety of materials. The candidate will be able to work independently, develop analytical methods, keep records in laboratory notebooks, communicate effectively, and assist in reviewing documents essential for the operation of the facility. Performance of job responsibilities will involve exposure to hazards that include radiation generating devices, radioactive materials, acids/bases, organic solvents and other hazardous materials.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to obtain Q‐clearance, which normally requires U.S. Citizenship.

  • Proven ability to meet tight schedules (time management), organize and prioritize tasks for effective accomplishment of project goals.

  • Hands-on experience with general chemical laboratory techniques.

  • Applicant must perform assigned tasks thoroughly to completion with a high attention to details with limited supervision.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with technical and operations personnel.

  • Experience with Windows based PC operation and standard software applications (Microsoft Office) including data manipulation, and use of databases.

  • Ability and willingness to follow safety and security procedures.

  • Promote a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Education: Position requires a PhD in Materials Science or related field completed within the last 5 years or soon to be completed.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with powder handling and processing including dry pressing, cold isostatic pressing, vacuum heat treatment, hydride reaction, chemical purification and electrorefining.

  • Familiarity with other common powder fabrication methods is also desired; e.g. extrusion, slip casting, compaction, milling and powder synthesis (sol gel, co-precipitation, solid state, hydrothermal, etc.).

  • LabView and/or MathLab programming skill

  • Experience working in a radiological or nuclear facility

  • Experience installing and maintaining laboratory equipment

  • Ability to work effectively as a part of a team in multi-disciplinary environment and interact effectively with a variety of organizations.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assignments so that schedules are met on time.

  • An ability to adapt to new requirements for projects and be flexible enough to learn new areas of research as needed.

  • Experience writing proposals

  • Experience supervising others

  • Active Q‐clearance.

Essential Job Functions: applying torque with hands or arms, fine motor control, lifting 30+ pounds, carrying 30+ pounds.

The Sigma Complex is a unique prototyping and fabrication facility that specializes in providing material, components, and manufacturing science to the Los Alamos experimental programs. As part of this mission, Sigma Division works with a broad range of materials from stainless steel and aluminum, to special metals such as ceramics, uranium and beryllium.
