Los Alamos National Laboratory Process / Industrial Engineer (R&D Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, Dynamic Structure Design, Engineering, and Vessel Operations (J-2) Group is looking for a Process/Industrial Engineer. Put your engineering talents to good use by joining J-2, a world-class R&D group that supports the Laboratory’s mission of Stockpile Stewardship. The selected candidate will first gain experience in the overall operations of confinement vessel “cradle to grave” process. This role serves to be the lead contact and oversight for the vessel supporting facilities, which includes the operations of assembly, clean out and decontamination, vessel weld repair and inspection, as well as a chemical analysis lab and waste disposal. In this role the Process Engineer will be responsible for all programmatic operations to include:

  • Maintaining all operational documents such as integrated work plans, technical procedures, safety plans, and on the job training development and implementation

  • Programmatic equipment inventory, maintenance, as well as scheduling and oversight of facility maintenance by outside vendors to ensure operational readiness

  • Serve as the point of contact for all support personnel needed for operations such as waste regulators, industrial hygiene and radiological control personnel.

  • Develop and oversee new technology to support operations in new facilities currently planned for construction

  • Evolve to SME of vessel operations with full understanding of processes and hazards

This position includes experience working in large-scale chemical and process facilities, with a strong understanding of complex chemical processes, safety protocols, engineering controls and conduct of operations, facility maintenance, and regulatory drivers for both facility and operational work. The Process Engineer position will be filled as a R&D (Mechanical/Industrial/Chemical/Structural) Engineer Level 2 or 3, depending on the skills and level of experience of the selected candidate. Candidates considered for this position must be able to obtain a security clearance.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

R&D Engineer 2 ($94,100-$155,700):

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in Design Basis for Systems to include designing, planning, and operating a facility with high hazards, large-scale processes and equipment with an understanding of hierarchy of controls.

  • Experience working with complex chemical or industrial hazards, constructed or supported the development of specific operational and technical procedures with specific safety and training requirements

  • Knowledge of Federal Regulations for industrial hazards, environmental and waste disposition to include hazards such as beryllium, heavy metals, and radioactive materials

  • Experience in facility maintenance, planning and scheduling, and upkeep of programmatic equipment

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and present technical issues, both verbally and in written form, to an audience with various technical backgrounds, as well as experience providing technical direction, mentoring and coordinating/monitoring the work of others.

R&D Engineer 3 ($113,100-$190,900):

In addition to the R&D Field Engineer 2 requirements, the R&D 3 Engineer must have the following:

  • Thorough knowledge and experience in designing, planning, operating a facility or process with high hazards to include development of specialized equipment focused on engineering controls for hazard mitigation or elimination

  • Demonstrated experience in a Management/Leadership role overseeing complex operations in a facility to include experience in developing and implementing technical procedures and required safety documents, as well as OJT (on the job training) procedures for personnel, performing hazard analysis and working with training personnel to identify needed institutional trainings for personnel

  • Thorough understanding of Conduct of Engineering, Formality of Operations, and experience implementing Federal Regulations for complex industrial operations, such as 10 CFR 851 Worker Safety and 10 CFR 835 Occupational Radiation Protection

Desired Qualifications:

Engineer Level 2

  • Experience working near hazardous operations such as high explosive firing sites, beryllium contamination areas, heavy metals, waste processing, cranes, forklifts

  • Experience working in decontamination processes, waste disposal and packaging

Engineer Level 3 (In addition to Level 2)

  • Working knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U. S. Stockpile

  • Knowledge of Consensus standards such as ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Division 1, 2, and 3, API 579 Fitness for Service Code, AWS Welding Code

R&D Engineer 2 Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

R&D Engineer 3 Education/Experience : Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
