Los Alamos National Laboratory Product Engineer (R&D Engineer 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Be part of an amazing engineering team here at the nation’s greatest R&D facility. As a Product Engineer you will report to the Product Engineering First Line Manager in PT-3. You will direct the disassembly and analysis of pits in support of the national surveillance mission and support process engineers in the manufacture of new pits and plutonium products. Interfacing daily with the design agency, quality assurance organizations and program management will also be part of your daily job duties. You will be the technical lead integrating various manufacturing, characterization, and testing processes applicable to pit surveillance and pit manufacturing. You will be responsible for coordinating with stakeholder organizations to validate development plans, conduct gap analyses, develop flowsheets, and build travelers for assigned programs. In the role of a Product Engineer, you will be use your plutonium knowledge, your understanding of manufacturing processes and your mechanical, chemical or materials engineering background to report on the state of pits in the stockpile or prepare documentation supporting the sale of new pits.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Expertise

Knowledge and proven experience in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, materials engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, quality engineering, or mechanical engineering. Should have also demonstrated experience in process variable/product quality relationships.

Project Management

Experience designing, planning, and executing manufacturing and characterization projects.

Production Planning

Demonstrated experience in manufacturing and quality documentation, e.g. preparing travelers or production plans, qualification of processes, preparing sales packages, etc.

Communication Skills

Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing with diverse employees and organizations at all levels (e.g. technicians, process owners, product/quality/design engineers, project managers, management, and federal sponsors).

Education and Experience

Advanced degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in project development, reporting, and presentation to management and sponsors.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in manufacturing process development.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in materials characterization techniques, including metallography, SEM/EPMA, FTIR, Auger, XPS, etc.

  • Knowledge of Analytical Chemistry Techniques.

  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in metallurgical processing of actinides, especially plutonium and its alloys and compounds.

  • Knowledge of Weapons Quality requirements, e.g. NAP-24, DPBPS, etc.

  • Experience with configuration management principles and practices.

  • Experience in NNSA product realization processes.

  • Expertise and experience in systems engineering, statistical process control (SPC), and lean six sigma processes.

The Pit Technologies division ensures execution of Pit Manufacturing, Surveillance, and National Security Missions by manufacturing plutonium and pit related products. The PT-3 Assembly group assembles plutonium products, surveils existing plutonium products and provides product engineering capabilities to the division.
