Los Alamos National Laboratory Production Control Specialist 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Q-5 is seeking a qualified Production Control Specialist to join our team. The High Explosives Science and Technology Group (Q-5) is part of the Weapon Stockpile Modernization (Q) Division. Q-5 is strongly teamwork based and very scientifically driven. In this position, you will work closely with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians on projects and programs for both internal and external customers. This position will be filled at either the Production Control Specialist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Production Control Specialist 1 $53,500 - $82,800

The Production Control Specialist 1 will collaborate with a wide range of technical staff to facilitate project goals through parts acquisition and inventory management of a wide range of equipment and materials. The selected candidate will perform work consistent with LANL policies, oversee safe and compliant acquisition, receipt, storage, labeling and electronic tracking of hazardous materials including explosives, chemicals, and radiological parts. The Production Control Specialist will also assist the group in procurement, storage, supply management, quality control and disposition of equipment and materials including laboratory equipment, machine/carpenter shop supplies and firing site consumables. This person will periodically and systemically perform, document and report 100% accountability of equipment, chemicals, high explosives, radiological materials and classified parts inventories using LANL specific databases such as Sunflower, ChemDB, High Explosives Inventory Database (HEIDi), and Classified Parts Inventory Management System (CPIMS).

Production Control Specialist 2 $64,400 - $102,300

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Production Control Specialist 2 will take initiative to resolve complex procurement, storage and inventory problems with creative solutions that result in long-term benefit to the group and broader organization. Under limited direction and supervision, the selected candidate will network with support and customer organizations to develop and implement best practices that are relevant across multiple disciplines and customers. The Production Control Specialist 2 will also serve as a subject matter expert in storage and handling of hazardous materials.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Hazardous Work

Sound knowledge and understanding of work hazards, safety practices and security risk; and resolution of related issues.


Experience in procurement, packaging, transport, storage, accountability and disposition/ disposal of materials and equipment.

Business Systems

Demonstrated proficiency with typical business software, computer hardware and use of computer systems. Specifically, spreadsheets, procurement systems and inventory databases.

Professional Skills

Exceptional customer service, organizational skills and ability to interact with all levels of personnel, service providers and customers. Excellent oral and written communication skills across all levels of staff and management. Meticulous attention to detail, organization and prioritizing skills, ability to anticipate job requirements and initiative to act accordingly.

Additional Job Requirements for Production Control Specialist 2:

LANL Requirements

Established knowledge of and experience with LANL requirements and resources in the areas of chemical, explosive, radiological and/or waste management practices.

Procurement Representative

Demonstrated experience serving as a Designated Procurement Representative

Material Consumption

In-depth understanding of material consumption in industrial environments such as machine shops and firing sites.

Production Control Specialist 1 Education and Experience

Position requires a minimum of 2 years of related experience.

Production Control Specialist 2 Education and Experience

Position requires 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Qualified High Explosives (HE) handler.

  • In-depth knowledge in sensitive materials management and inventory, particularly high explosives, hazardous chemicals and/or classified parts.

  • Experience working in an industrial setting managing supplies of stock materials and consumable equipment.

  • In-depth experience using and manipulating databases and electronic reporting tools such as FileMaker Pro and Sharepoint.

  • Demonstrated implementation of DOE STD 1212, Explosives Safety; P101-8, LANL Explosives Safety; P101-14, Chemical Management; P821-2, Management of Classified Parts; and/or P409, Waste Management.

  • Knowledge of and training in the control and accountability of classified material as a classified matter parts custodian.

  • Designated Procurement Representative (DPR) with experience with iProcurement, PCard, and RRBs.

  • Active DOE Q, which normally requires US citizenship.

This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory.
