What You Will Do

Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation Division is seeking a R&D; Engineer 1 with interests in one of the areas listed below. The selected candidate will partner with staff to conduct research in an area that is closely aligned with their academic interests.

  • Developing technologies to detect the proliferation or diversion of nuclear materials;

  • Conducting R&D; in support of diagnosing and effectively responding to weapons of mass destruction and improvised nuclear devices;

  • Developing nuclear reactor concepts for power applications in harsh environments;

  • Developing safeguards concepts, instruments and techniques used to monitor and measure nuclear materials;

  • Underlying Monte Carlo radiation transport methods/applications and multi-scale phenomenological/physical modeling; and

  • Conducting experiments to measure fundamental nuclear properties of interest to nuclear energy or security applications;

There are opportunities for technically advanced work performed here to be published in journals or conference proceedings.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Publication record in one or more of the following areas: nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering or other closely related technical field of study.

  • Demonstrated experience or education in one of the research areas listed above.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.

  • Demonstrated record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel and internal and external customers.

Desired Skills:

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which generally requires U.S. citizenship.


A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in nuclear, mechanical or other engineering discipline from an Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university program is required; advanced degree in engineering preferred.

Where You Will Work

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation (NEN) Division is a focal point for the Laboratory’s nuclear engineering and nonproliferation work in support of international security. In the past decade the division has performed work in more than 60 countries. The division is comprised of five groups: NEN-1 (Safeguards Science and Technology), NEN-2 (Advanced Nuclear Technology), NEN-3 (International Threat Reduction), NEN-5 (Systems Design and Analysis), and NEN-6 (Advanced Nuclear Experiments).
