What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated, self-driven Non-Destructive Assay (NDA) Engineer to join our Nuclear Materials Support Service (NPI-9) group to support either day or swing shift operations. NPI-9 provides NDA and other measurement support functions in support of operations at the LANL Plutonium Facility. This is your chance to make a real difference while working on and supporting important research directly impacting national security.
The NDA Engineer 1/2 (R&D Engineer 1/2) will report to the Day Shift Manufacturing Manager 3 in the NPI-9 group within the Nuclear Process Infrastructure Division. The NPI-9 Technical Support Team is responsible for a large variety of NDA processes and operates within multiple locations in the Plutonium Facility and other associated facilities.
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1 or R&D Engineer 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
R&D Engineer 1 ($85,400-$139,600)
As an R&D Engineer 1 you will be working with other engineers/researchers and technicians to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot NDA equipment used for measuring special nuclear materials (SNM). As assigned, you will manage and coordinate NDA equipment repair and maintenance at the LANL Plutonium Facility. You will have the opportunity to help develop and implement new NDA processes to provide solutions for future NDA measurement needs. The selected candidate will also keep current on the status of the NDA processes and technologies and help solve engineering problems while maintaining designated equipment for NDA operations.
R&D Engineer 2 ($94,100-$155,700)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you assist in the development of technical products such as journal papers and reports, the development of intellectual property. You will set direction and goals for well-defined tasks involving more than one person. Scopes tasks within a project and defines deliverables at task level. Leads specific project tasks to meet scope, schedule and budget. As a R&D Engineer 2 you will provide peer review of the work of others across organizations or disciplines and develop mentoring skills to mentors junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth.

Professional Level Experience: Working knowledge in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: electrical, mechanical, nuclear or another R&D engineering field.
Measurement Technologies and Systems: Knowledge of underlying principles used in nuclear materials measurement technologies and systems; such as radioactive decay processes, interaction of radiation and matter, and radiation detection.
Statistical Methods: Knowledge of statistical methods used for non-destructive assay data analysis methods.
Interpersonal Skills: Experience in organization, planning, teamwork, customer interactions, and interpersonal communications.
Job Performance: Possesses the ability to work productively on multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
Documentation of Work: Interest in and ability to develop technical products such as journal papers and reports.
Compliance : Experience in conducting scientific/engineering work while complying with ES&H requirements and using appropriate administrative controls, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment under supervision.
DOE: DOE 426.2 Education Requirement: This position requires a Bachelor of Science degree and two (2) years of job related experience, and one (1) year of experience working in a Nuclear Facility.

R&D Engineer 1
Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
R&D Engineer 2
Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Radiation Monitoring Systems: Demonstrated experience with radiation detectors and data collection software.
Non-Destructive Assay (NDA): Demonstrated experience performing NDA measurements on special nuclear materials.
Tools and Systems : Demonstrated work experience performing maintenance, calibrations and qualification of NDA measurement systems.
Engineering Software: Demonstrated experience with a programming environment with hardware control and data acquisition functionality, such as LabVIEW.
Engineering Design: Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software and production of detailed mechanical drawings.
Education/Experience: Advanced degree in an Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program.
