Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Detonator Production (DP) is seeking a High Explosives Packaging and Transportation Engineer (R&D Engineer 3) to develop packaging solutions and coordinate shipment planning to support the manufacture of high explosive detonators and subcomponents. As one of the premier production agencies in the National Security Enterprise, DP works with a variety of stakeholders to provide high-quality products and services that support the nuclear stockpile, protect our nation, and promote world stability.

This position will serve as the primary Production Agency (PA) engineer on the Packaging and Transportation (P&T) team. The successful candidate will possess both engineering and project management skills and experience. The specific tasks associated with this position include:


  • Ensure that outgoing hazardous material (HAZMAT) shipments meet the appropriate transportation hazard classification and/or special permit requirements to provide safe, efficient, and legal storage, handling, and transportation of high explosive (HE) material

  • Specify packaging and labeling requirements in accordance with United Nations (UN) specifications and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations

  • Prepare and approve HAZMAT shipping documentation

  • Develop and coordinate HAZMAT packaging testing for new and legacy container designs to support the safe containment of HE material across a wide variety of environmental situations and storage scenarios

  • Develop internal operating procedures and processes to handle organizational needs concerning proper HAZMAT packaging

  • Collaborate with Design Agency (DA) engineers to develop compliant packaging solutions

  • Provide engineering support to improve the manufacturability, economy, and performance of packaging solutions

  • Develop ad-hoc shipping solutions to support R&D and special situations

Project Management

  • Coordinate the shipment of HE and classified components

  • Develop project plans to meet engineering milestones

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support P&T deliverables

The successful candidate will work across technical organizations within the Associate Laboratory Directorate of Weapons Production (ALDWP), including manufacturing, engineering, and program management groups, as well as internal and external customers.

This position will report to the First Line Manager (FLM) in the Detonator Production Support (DP-SUP) group. This group is responsible for production planning and scheduling, inventory control and warehouse management, procurement and supply chain maintenance, and information systems development.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering: Thorough knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: aerospace, biomedical, chemical, computational, electrical, mechanical, nuclear or other R&D engineering field.

Design: Thorough knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing research and development projects, including test plans.

Drafting: Working knowledge and understanding of design drafting practices, geometric tolerancing, and engineering specifications.

Project Management: Working knowledge of and experience in project management of technical or operational work; managing to scope, schedule, budget, and technical baselines; and documenting baseline reports and change control actions.

Planning: Workingknowledge ofand experience inplanning and defining project scope through collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs) and other relevant stakeholders.

Scheduling: Working knowledge ofand experience incoordinating multiple operations, balancing resources and priorities, and using software to assign and schedule work.

Communication: Strong interpersonal, presentation, and written skills; demonstrated by relationships built, briefings, and presentations.

Education/Experience :Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

HAZMAT/Transportation: Thorough knowledge and understanding of transportation regulations (e.g., CFR Title 49) as applicable to the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Energy (DOE), and/or Department of Transportation (DOT).

Packaging/Shipping: Thorough knowledge and understanding of packaging and shipping solutions and designs, particularly related to HAZMAT material.

Continuous Improvement: Demonstrated experience with continuous improvement (CI) efforts, such as Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or other methodologies.

Nature of Work: Active “Q” clearance; demonstrated experience interacting with DOE/NNSA and National Security Enterprise sites and complexes.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
