Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer 4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Actinide Material Processing and Power (AMPP) Division executes various Pu-238 science and manufacturing missions in support our nation’s security and space endeavors. AMPP-DO is in search of a senior level Product Engineer to support the Miniature RTG for NanoSat Applications (MRNA) Program. The MRNA Program is a multi-year program geared to re-establish LANL’s Lightweight Radioisotope Heater Unit (LWRHU) production capabilities.

The selected candidate will:

  • Ensure technical activities are defined and performed consistent with the mRHU Quality Assurance Program;

  • Serve as a technical lead for mRHU-related activities and be involved in the planning, tracking, and execution of the established production, assembly and testing schedule with yearly deliverables;

  • Ensure conformance to specifications by translating information into manufacturing and procurement definitions, providing and maintaining drawings for all regular and special production items, and ensuring the availability of current information and product configuration definitions at all levels of production;

  • Prescribe effective manufacturing procedures by provision of detailed operation processes, complete bills of material and parts lists defining design equivalency as appropriate and monitoring conformance;

  • Ensure complete understanding of engineering information, availability of equipment, prompt resolution of technical problems and the availability of future capabilities and technologies;

  • Investigate and initiate changes to the product specifications as needed;

  • Promote improvements in processes and productivity; and, serve as a voting quorum member of the MRB.

  • Provide leadership and tactical planning for execution of component assembly and testing production mission and applies a broad technical and operational expertise to achieve the annual deliverables;

  • Provide the strategic leadership to sustain the component production, assembly and testing mission; and Serve as the expert on the product specification/requirements.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience working with a design agency and other production agencies to participate as technical lead on a product realization team.

  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience working with manufacturing execution system (e.g. Solumina) or other electronic sales packages.

  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated record of written communication that may include corporate reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, procedure development, or research analysis and other assignments as necessary to meet project objectives.

  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience working in a low yield, moderate/high hazard production and testing facility: developing strategies for equipment upgrades and maintenance, ensuring adequate resources are obtained and maintained without disruption to manufacturing and testing.

  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience working with quality and process engineers to ensure that product requirements are completed on time and within specification.

  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience with NAP-401.1 quality requirements, NQA-1 quality requirements, Defense Programs Business Process System requirements (DPBPS) or WR business practices and requirements.

  • Proven success working as a leader of a technical team, and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel; building trust, gaining consensus, and resolving conflicts.

DOE Order 426.2 requires a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related science, 2 years of job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Education/Experience: Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with vibration, shock, thermal effects, fixture design, equipment design and procurement, aqueous and granular fuel production.

  • Demonstrated experience with customer demand schedules which establishes the product demand for all the agencies.

  • Demonstrated experience in monitoring and tracking progress. Maintain schedules and quality path towards the production mission.

  • Demonstrated experience in negotiation to ensure that resources are available to accomplish the work, to identify procurement needs, and to gather resources to complete deliverables within the scope and schedules defined in the project plan.

  • Demonstrated experience using independent judgment to monitor performance and managing, under change control, the project deliverables

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
