What You Will Do
Q-5, the High Explosives Science and Technology Group, serves the Laboratory and the Nation providing the knowledge base in High Explosives (HE) for the Nuclear Weapons Program and other critical national security areas. The Group's capabilities include chemical synthesis of new explosives and energetic and inert materials; preparation of composite energetic materials; reactive materials research; complete analytical and physical characterization services; small-scale safety, sensitivity, and performance testing of energetic materials; and applied problem solving. The Group is seeking a Research Technician 4 .
R&D Technician 4
We have a specific need for expertise in hardware and experimental sample design, fabrication, and assembly involving conventional and explosive materials. The R&D Technician 4 will design, fabricate, and assemble hardware and samples while interacting with scientists, engineers, modelers, technologists, and technicians to perform experiments and develop manufacturing processes. They will participate in brainstorming sessions with customers and group members to determine technical approaches and how to best realize them. They will take the collaborative prototype designs and fabricate and assemble them, independently as well as part of a team.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Strong oral and written communication skills communicating
with customers/requesters of machining services
developing and understanding technical requirements (e.g., form, function, tolerances, etc.)
Documented record of operating and maintaining manual and CNC machining equipment, including multiple brands, systems, and programing languages
Extensive hands-on experience machining to fulfill customer requirements
Experience with dimensional tolerancing and metrology
Experience designing and manufacturing high-tolerance inspection fixtures
Experience programming and manufacturing high-tolerance, complex parts from exotic materials
Proficiency in drafting
Education/Experience: Position requires an Associates’ Degree and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Demonstrated record of willingness to receive mentorship and training to grow technically and take on new roles and responsibilities
Demonstrated record of commitment to safety in a laboratory or manufacturing environment
Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship
Willingness to travel to offsite facilities, when needed

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
