What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 level or Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

At LANL, we solve National Security challenges through scientific excellence. X-Theoretical Design (XTD) division members are the scientific stewards of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, applying theoretical and computational physics to the performance and safety of nuclear weapons. XTD scientists also contribute their expertise to the nation’s foreign threat assessment, counter-proliferation and non-proliferation efforts through assessment of foreign devices, design of tools to address nuclear emergency response scenarios, and creation of solutions to inhibit nuclear proliferation.
In addition, XTD scientists drive cutting edge advances in astrophysics, geophysics, high energy density physics, inertial confinement fusion, chemistry, and material science. Members of XTD use multi-physics codes, running on some of the world’s fastest supercomputers, to create and analyze simulations of very complex systems. We work closely with many other organizations in a diverse variety of tasks, including experimental design and analysis, model development, code validation, and project leadership.
Scientist 2 ($91,800 - $151,400)
The successful candidate will:
Develop/demonstrate a thorough knowledge of and capability with large, multi-physics codes.
Apply multi-physics codes to solve problems of national security interest.
Contribute to one or more of these related tasks: experimental design and analysis, model development efforts, data evaluation, and code validation.
Contribute to both individual and team efforts.
Learn and develop skills in complementary disciplines to demonstrate generalist capabilities.
Work with a wide variety of colleagues with varying backgrounds on research covering multiple physics areas in order to solve difficult problems.
Demonstrate a commitment to quality research, technical and scientific excellence, professional integrity, and personal initiative.
Demonstrate and maintain excellence in communication, both written and verbal.
Scientist 3 ($110,400 - $186,300)
In addition to the job duties outlined above, the Scientist 3 will be required to:
Contribute leadership skills to team efforts and must have the ability to lead projects.
Contribute to organizational knowledge level by mentoring others.
Continue to expand their technical knowledge.
Demonstrate generalist capabilities in solving problems.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
You will need significant knowledge and demonstrated experience with one or more of these related tasks: running computational physics codes, experimental design and analysis, model development efforts, data evaluation, and code validation.
You must demonstrate commitment to quality research, technical and scientific excellence, professional integrity, and personal initiative.
You must have a proven ability to work independently and in a team environment on research covering multiple physics areas in order to solve difficult problems in support of National Security.
The ability and willingness to obtain a DOE Q-clearance, which requires US citizenship.
Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3:
You will need thorough knowledge and experience with one or more of these related tasks, such as experimental design and analysis, model development efforts, data evaluation, and code validation.
A documented history of technical contributions to one or more of the following fields such as nuclear physics, plasma physics, fluid dynamics , astrophysics , shock physics, energetic materials, particle physics, materials science.
You must demonstrate technical leadership experience along with supervisory and/or mentoring experience.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires an advanced degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an advanced degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
PhD preferred with postdoctoral work in the following related fields: Physics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or Materials Science.
Active DOE “Q” Clearance.
Experience with large-scale computing.
Familiarity with design and analysis of nuclear weapons.
Experience in designing, analyzing and/or conducting experiments.
Knowledge and experience relative to uncertainty and/or risk analysis.
