Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Technologist 1 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The successful applicant will perform standard analytical chemistry procedures for the characterization of nuclear materials. The work involves the hands-on processing and subsequent analysis of a variety of sample matrices and includes maintaining multiple types of radiometric counting instrumentation. We are seeking applicants who are committed to LANL safety and security standards and who have experience working in a radiological/nuclear facility. Successful candidates should be familiar with chemical laboratory operations and demonstrate an aptitude for continuing on-the-job cross-training. Work assignments will be directly related to national security objectives and requires the individual to protect and maintain sensitive or classified information.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrate understanding of analytical chemical methods and operation of radiometric instruments

  • Willingness to perform hands-on operations with radioactive and nuclear material

  • Experience working in a glovebox or open front hood within a radiological facility

  • Knowledge and experience in radiological contamination monitoring and control

  • Demonstrated work experience in a team environment while exhibiting collaborative behavior

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including technical communications

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which usually requires US citizenship

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and experience with one or more of the following analytical techniques: actinide sample preparation including chemical separations, alpha spectroscopy, gamma spectrocopy, liquid scintillation counting, or other analytical chemistry techniques

  • Demonstrated experience or specialized training for working with radioactive and nuclear materials

  • Demonstrated ability to follow formal process work instructions and procedures

  • Familiarity and experience with performing technical work within a quality assurance and quality control program

  • Experience supporting or performing laboratory activities including research, development, sample preparation or sample analysis

  • Knowledge of DOE Conduct of Operations and safety/security requirements for nuclear/radiological facilities

  • Active Q clearance

  • DOE Human Reliability Program approval

  • Certified as a Fissionable Material Handler

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
