Los Alamos National Laboratory X-Ray Lab Research Technologist (Research Technologist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The M-3 Focused Experiments Group is seeking a qualified Research Technologist to join our team. The Research Technologist will provide leadership in maintenance and operational support for the flash x-ray equipment that is an essential diagnostic in our explosives experiments for the Weapons program and others. The X-Ray Calibration Laboratory (XRCL) provides maintenance and development for the x-ray equipment. This position will be filled at either the Scientist 3 or Scientist 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Research Technologist 2 $85,400 - $139,600

The Research Technologist 2 will be responsible for the following:

  • In collaboration with management and staff, perform technical work requiring advanced knowledge in the area of R&D equipment operation and development

  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and completion of XRCL objectives

  • Effectively communicate status on deliverables through internal reports, progress reports

  • Lead XRCL activities to meet deliverables

  • Work in area involving high consequences for safety, i.e. energized electrical work, pulsed power, radiological work, hoisting and rigging, forklifts, pressurized systems

Research Technologist 3 $94,100 - $155,700

In addition to Research Technologist 2 responsibilities, the Research Technologist 3 will be responsible for the following:

  • Lead and direct activities of personnel in the XRCL, including technicians and collaborating staff

  • Ensure work, materials, processes and final product meet quality and compliance specifications and are completed according to established requirements

  • Own responsibility for the safety/security envelope for XRCL activities

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated sound technical experience in R&D equipment operation, maintenance and development

  • Demonstrated working experience with OSHA safety requirements

  • Demonstrated working experience in engineering including design, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance

  • Demonstrated experience with procedure development adhering to safety and compliance requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally

  • Demonstrated experience in planning, coordination, and leading a team to completion of assigned work

  • Must be able to obtain a Q clearance (this generally means that the candidate must be a U. S. citizen).

Additional Job Requirements for Research Technologist 3:

  • Demonstrated experience in operational leadership of hazardous work activities

  • Expert knowledge of work planning and control methods

  • Expert knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques

  • Demonstrated expert-level experience in troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance

  • Expert knowledge of industry codes and standards in respective discipline

  • Demonstrated initiative to develop and execute solution paths in order to meet deliverables and schedule requirements

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Q Clearance.

  • LANL training program completion in at least one of the following: Energized Electrical Worker; Crane Operator

  • Hands-on experience with energized electrical work / pulsed power applications

  • Demonstrated initiative to develop and execute solution paths in order to meet deliverables and schedule requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory procedures, safety compliance programs, standards and guides.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
