Natural Resources Professional (Environmental Professional 1)

What You Will Do

The Environmental Stewardship Group within the Environmental Protection Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an Environmental Professional to assist with a broad array of natural resource and sampling projects. You will collaborate with a large team of professionals, technicians, and students to support environmental compliance, environmental monitoring, and natural resource management across the Laboratory's approximately 40 square miles. You will work to enable the Laboratory's broader mission of solving national security challenges through simultaneous excellence. The selected candidate will support the following programs within the Resources Management Team:
  • The Biological Resources Program ensures Laboratory operations comply with federal and state laws (i.e. Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act) protecting biological resources and implements several biological monitoring programs that support these compliance efforts.
  • Soil, Foodstuffs, and Biota monitoring which consists of collecting, processing, and submitting environmental monitoring samples such as soil, river and reservoir sediment, vegetation, small mammals, crayfish, fish, roadkill, and foodstuffs from the Laboratory and surrounding areas for the analyses of radionuclides, metals, and organic chemicals.
  • The Trails Management Program oversees maintenance of over fifty miles of trails on DOE property, and coordinates outreach to trail users and construction projects to minimize conflicts.
  • Land Stewardship Initiatives staff identify locations and funding opportunities to implement projects to improve invasive species management, erosion control and watershed restoration, and vegetation management for pollinator species.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


  • General knowledge of natural resources field techniques and data collection including but not limited to biological monitoring, environmental sampling, vegetation monitoring, plant identification, and general best practices for erosion control.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with experience producing technical reports, compiling meeting notes, drafting professional emails, and delivering presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Strong work ethic and excellent organizational skills with the ability to assist with project planning and implementation, meet deliverable deadlines, and manage programmatic records.
  • Self-initiating, communicative work style with very strong interpersonal and collaborative-work capabilities.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments, tolerate varying environmental conditions, and can hike long distances, while carrying loads of 25 pounds over rough, uneven, and steep terrain.
  • Ability to read and navigate with topographic maps, mobile device mapping applications, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other tools.
  • Ability to follow technical procedures and record field data correctly and clearly; attention to detail.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 2 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, or Environmental Science strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in Geographical Information Systems for use in project planning, data collection, and analyses.
  • Demonstrated experience with professional stakeholder and community engagement, including coordinating with internal and external partners and communicating technical environmental information to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience providing customer-focused support for environmental compliance, including advising project teams on regulatory requirements and ensuring activities align with applicable environmental policies and restrictions.
  • Ability to prepare and implement technical procedures, safety documents, policies, and compliance review for project planning and execution.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2
- Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
