What You Will Do

As a postdoctoral research assistant, you will be an integral member of a team tackling a variety of welding and directed energy deposition additive manufacturing challenges involving laser and electron beam welding and processing, and electron beam additive manufacturing. In particular, you will be working on projects for determining properties of welds/AM builds and the machines on which they are made to demonstrate the capabilities of the processes represented. You will work with a mentor, but will be assigned portions of projects over which you will have responsibility.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Hands on physical research experience, especially in the areas of high energy density welding and/or directed energy deposition additive manufacturing.
  • Experience with weld monitoring and diagnostics.
  • Experience with computer data acquisition systems on processing or fabrication equipment.
  • Desire to work on production-centric metal manufacturing research and development activities.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated by experience presenting research results at technical conferences, authoring peer-reviewed journal articles and ability to interact with colleagues.
  • Completed coursework or research experience in one of the disciplines outlined above.
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance which normally requires U.S. Citizenship.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Self-motivated and independent researcher who has demonstrated experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Experience with welding or additive manufacturing equipment and operation, particularly lasers, electron beams, or directed energy deposition additive manufacturing.
  • An understanding of metals manufacturing methods including, but not limited to: welding, directed energy deposition additive manufacturing, brazing, wire production, heat treatment, thermal imaging, induction heating, and machining.
  • Experience with mechanical property testing and characterization.
  • Experience using modeling and simulation codes such as C++, Abaqus, Ansys, Comsol or similar.
  • Experience with non-destructive examination techniques, such as radiographic testing, ultrasonic testing, electromagnetic testing, penetrant testing, proof testing, or similar.
