Our Facility Groups are responsible for the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, and support nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory. This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Engineering Technologist 1 ($85,900 - $139,900)
An Engineering Technologist can fill many roles within an engineering organization. In this role, the Engineering Technologist functions as a Laser Scanning Technician in Building Information Modeling (BIM). The Laser Scanning Technician will be in charge of performing 3D scans of facilities utilizing advance Faro scanners, coordinate scan data with survey data, post-processing of scan data, point cloud management to enhance the delivery of design and engineering services that incorporate 3D laser scans into design elements, and integrating scan data into design models when required. The Laser Scanning Technician will also assist in model management, BIM specific initiatives and BIM coordination between the engineering team, the specialty trades, contractors and operations. The Laser Scanning Technician works closely with Facility Engineers, Project Engineers, Field Engineers, Building Managers, Operation Managers, and the BIM Manager in a support function.
Engineering Technologist 2 ($94,500 - $154,600)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Engineering Technologist 2 performs the following duties:
- Lead a team from scanning a facility to completing a 3D model
- Lead meetings discussing 3D scans and survey data with customers and stakeholders
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Engineering Technologist 1
- Proficiency in operating Faro Scanners, with a basic understanding of their capabilities and limitations
- Understanding of basic field layout principles
- Understanding basic concepts of Mechanical Electrical Piping (MEP) systems
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Ability to read and interpret drawings
- Desktop automation skills required (MS Office Suite)
- Familiarity with industry-standard software for post-processing and integrating scan data (e.g., Faro Scene, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Revit
- Ability to lead and instruct others in the tasks listed in the What You Will Do section

- Advanced level of understanding of field layout principles
- Advanced level of understanding of MEP systems

Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 2: Position requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and practical work experience related to the occupation.

Engineering Technologist 1:
- Experienced in producing designs utilizing Computer Aided Drafting tools and work processes
- Experience or certifications in a field related to structures, systems, or components design development or support
- Knowledge of LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals, policies, procedures, and standards (https://engstandards.lanl.gov/index.shtml)
- Experience in DOE/NNSA nonreactor nuclear facilities and radiological facilities or projects
- Advanced degree in relevant field
- Strong personal management skills, dedication, organization, and flexibility

- Experience in DOE/NNSA nonreactor nuclear facilities and radiological facilities or projects
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
