We are currently seeking a group leader to provide strategic direction and management oversight for the Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering Group (C-CDE) in the Chemistry Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory. Reporting to the Chemistry Division Leader, the group leader will provide strategic, scientific, technical, and operational leadership for a multidisciplinary group of approximately 40 staff, postdocs, students, contractors, and guest scientists.
C-CDE combines leading-edge expertise in analytical chemistry, polymer and material science, and applied chemical engineering to support programs of national significance. The group's mission areas span the nuclear weapons program, energy science, nuclear nonproliferation, public health, and environmental protection. The group leader will lead the group's technical direction, staff development, sponsor engagement and program development, and operational execution, while fostering a collaborative and safety-focused work culture.
This line management role will be funded between 50 to 100%, depending on the programmatic scope retained by the selected candidate and as negotiated with the Chemistry Division Office. The successful candidate will function as a key part of the division management team, sharing responsibility for the objectives and mission of the Chemistry Division, including planning scientific and programmatic directions, and ensuring sound management practices. The group leader will also oversee compliance in the areas of safety, security, environmental management, financial accountability, staffing and human resource issues, and facilities and operations.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated record of technical achievement and programmatic impact, as evidenced by publications, leadership of high-impact projects, awards, or committee appointments in areas relevant to the group's activities, including analytical chemistry, polymer and material science, and applied chemical engineering.
- Demonstrated record of technical leadership and management, including technical decision-making, promotion of workplace safety and security, goal setting, personnel supervision, mentorship, team building, conflict resolution, and the ability to inspire and motivate diverse teams, while responsibly managing financial and organizational resources.
- Strong record of operational oversight and management of experimental or technical activities, including experience operating or managing within facilities involving chemical and/or radiological hazards and limited security areas.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and successfully respond to new funding opportunities, develop programs, and assemble and lead effective project teams across disciplinary and organizational boundaries.
- Must include a CV with a publication list and a cover letter addressing your background as it fulfills the job requirements and desired skills.
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
Desired Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of LANL policies in integrated work management, safety, security, quality, environment, finance, and human resources.
- Experience in line management or program management
- Broad familiarity with common analytical chemistry methods, materials testing, and polymer science
- Active DOE Q clearance
Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and at least 8 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in Chemistry, Physics or related field.
Work Environment:
Work Schedule: This position is a full-time onsite position working standard business hours.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
