As part of the Associate Lab Directorate of Weapons Production (ALDWP), the work we do in Production Support Services Division (PSS) directly affects mission success across Los Alamos National Laboratory.
As a Computing Systems Professional 2 (CSP2) on the Online Collaboration and Infrastructure team, you will serve as a systems administrator supporting multiple Windows Server environments. You will be responsible for ensuring the performance, reliability, and security of Windows IIS and SQL Server platforms in a fast-paced environment. This role requires close collaboration with software developers, system administrators, network and database administrators, customers, and cross-functional teams to deliver seamless integration, high availability, timely issue resolution, and upgrades for mission-critical systems supporting ALDWP's unclassified and classified environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Infrastructure & Core Systems Administration
- Install, configure, patch, and troubleshoot Windows Server 2022, SQL Server 2019 Enterprise, and Microsoft IIS.
- Support the administration of Microsoft VMware virtual Windows Servers.
- Support enforcement of strict password policies, data integrity, and file system security on server infrastructure.
- Test and evaluate commercial and custom developed software for quality and proper operation.
- Support migration efforts across Development, Staging, and Production environments to ensure seamless transitions and operational continuity.
- Optimize the Windows infrastructure environment by administering, monitoring, and improving server performance, reliability, security, and availability.
- Research emerging technologies, industry trends, hardware, software tools, and solutions.
- Develop and use scripts to support task automation and operational efficiency.
Team Contribution & Procedures
- Contribute to server and Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) software projects to meet customer technical requirements.
- Assist in planning, documenting, and implementing solutions for server and COTS requirements.
- Work collaboratively with team members while developing skills and knowledge in system administration tasks.
- Assist in developing and maintaining procedures for installing, configuring, hardening, and troubleshooting Windows Servers and COTS software.
Customer Service & Communication
- Provide support to customers in both unclassified and classified environments.
- Track, prioritize, and resolve support issues and service requests using the PSS-1 ticketing system and Kanban boards in alignment with SLA requirements.
- Deliver exceptional customer service and support through clear communication, rapport-building, and effective issue resolution for a diverse range of stakeholders, including in high-visibility or high-pressure environments.
- Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical personnel.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience testing, troubleshooting, patching, and remediating vulnerabilities, as well as resolving operating system and application issues within a heterogeneous computing environment.
- Working knowledge of Windows Server 2022, virtualized environments, Microsoft IIS, Active Directory, and PowerShell scripting for system administration tasks.
- Skilled in using VMware for server and resource management.
- Experience implementing authentication methods, configuring web and server certificates, and enabling Single Sign-On (SSO) for applications and systems.
- Experience applying computer security principles and networking protocols within computing environments.
- Demonstrated experience installing, configuring, and maintaining SQL Server 2019 Enterprise and associated databases.
- Demonstrated experience installing, configuring, and deploying Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software in enterprise environments.
Education/Experience:
Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field and a minimum of four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced vendor certification (Windows Server, Red Hat, AWS, VMware, and related technologies)
- Experience supporting Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or other Linux distributions.
- Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
- Experience hardening and securing operating systems in accordance with NIST and STIG cybersecurity frameworks.
- Knowledgeable in developing and managing GPOs and local policies for Windows systems.
- Experience working in an Agile framework (Kanban).
- Active DOE Q clearance.
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
