What You Will Do

This position will be filled at the Computing Systems Professional 2 level. Infrastructure Service Division is seeking an energetic and customer-focused Computing Systems Professional 2 for the ISD Institutional Services (ISD-IS) group. The group is organized institutional support that focuses on supporting unclassified and classified institutional and mission support needs, and a technical services group that manages enterprise services for Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This position is within Infrastructure Services (IS) and is part of the Linux Server Institutional team. The technologies supported by this team require continuous availability (24/7), and team members are expected to demonstrate a high level of professionalism, reliability, and operational efficiency. The Systems Administrator will primarily support Linux Red Hat operating systems across three distinct networks and, upon obtaining the appropriate security clearance, will also support classified systems. Responsibilities include administration and support of Linux Red Hat environments, Microsoft Windows Server systems, Perl scripting, Hostmaster, and Microsoft Active Directory.

The successful candidate will work on a team supporting institutional and programmatic customers at locations across the laboratory, performing a wide variety of system administration activities for classified servers and workstations. Responsibilities include Linux Red Hat server administration; development of basic Perl and PowerShell scripts to support automation; use of enterprise service management tools; and participation in the design, implementation, and ongoing support of services for the Enterprise Secure Network (ESN), including but not limited to:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of managing hardware and operating systems including system architecture, network infrastructures, and client server principles
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Linux RHEL and Microsoft Windows servers
  • Demonstrated knowledge in virtual environments, including VMware
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and technologies
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills on Linux RHEL and networking
  • Ability to read, write, and translate technical ideas into verbiage that can be delivered to a variety of audiences
  • Demonstrated skill in working professionally with customers, vendors, and coworkers to maintain a successful work environment and complete mission
  • Demonstrated experience creating and executing basic Perl and PowerShell scripts for automated tasks
  • Communicating technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel
  • Mentoring and training fellow team members in basic and advanced system administration
  • Practicing Information Architecture processes and standards
  • Proactively resolve vulnerabilities for Linux operating systems.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Wide-ranging experience administering Linux operating systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting and resolving complex operating systems, hardware and application issues.
  • Experience with vulnerability remediation including utilization of cyber-related tools for auditing, compliance verification, vulnerability testing, system patching and continuous monitoring.

Education/Experience:
Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field and a minimum of four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active DOE L or Q clearance, or equivalent, transferable clearance.
  • Experience securing Operating Systems using NIST and STIG cyber security frameworks.
  • Applicable advanced vendor certification (RHEL Certified System Administrator)

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
