Data Science and AI Graduate Student Intern
- Req. Number: IRC143154
- Organization : Materials Science In Radiation & Dynamics Extremes/MST-8
- City, State: Los Alamos, New Mexico
We are seeking a graduate student skilled in data science and in current artificial intelligence (AI) tooling to build Findable, Interoperable, Accessible, and Reusable (FAIR) tools for data ingestion pipelines. Scientific datasets are notoriously difficult to clean and make useful for AI applications. Key to enabling adoption of FAIR data practices for scientific data is reducing the barrier to ingestion and interpretation. In this internship, a student will use Python, high performance compute environments, agents, ontologies, and other tools to build robust, trustworthy automation pipelines. The position will be awarded to the candidate that has a demonstrated ability to integrate and develop tools for FAIR data practices.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Knowledge
- AI / Data engineering (embeddings, agentic workflows)
- Definitions and tooling for ontologies, graphs, and semantic relationships
- Understanding of APIs, data quality principles, and data systems
Skills
- Consume traditional databases, vector databases, and semantic indexing tools for data interpretation
- Implement models that interpret structured and unstructured data
- Develop means of semantically enriching datasets
Abilities
- Ability to conceptualize how ontologies can drive agentic decision-making
- Ability to work with domain experts to refine ontological models
- Ability to operate in environments with evolving requirements and technologies
Education/Experience:
Graduate
- Must be enrolled (6 semester credit hours or full-time equivalent) in an accredited, degree-granting graduate level program (or international equivalent)
- Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
- Familiarity with integrating rule-based reasoning systems with flexible large language models
- Familiarity with using LLM agent frameworks
- Experience with building agent evaluation frameworks
- The ability to translate strong reasoning skills around ambiguous, incomplete, or evolving data environments into agent pipelines
