Los Alamos National Laboratory's Prototype Fabrication Division invites you to join us in Los Alamos, New Mexico! Our team is hiring a Deputy Group Leader (DGL) to provide exceptional operational, programmatic and technical leadership for the Prototype Fabrication Division's Manufacturing Group (PF-MFG).
The Manufacturing Group provides both unclassified and classified, non-hazardous and hazardous prototype manufacturing capabilities across a diverse set of materials and components to support the Laboratory's core weapons program and other customer needs. We are a team of machinists, welders, manufacturing engineers, planners, schedulers, and other experts. We are proud of the high-precision and critical manufacturing we perform to support the Laboratory's Mission.
The DGL will assist in ensuring that the proper infrastructure and resources are available to meet programmatic demands and will support the development of methods and techniques for both general and specialized manufacturing. Specific capabilities which reside within PF-MFG include work acceptance and execution, precision machining and fabrication, welding, CNC programming, and specialized tooling design and development. These capabilities are applied to both standard materials and those with hazardous characteristics to include beryllium and depleted uranium. The DGL will help establish and maintain a proper safety, security, environmental and quality assurance envelope to conduct fabrication operations in accordance with applicable Laboratory, federal, and state requirements.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assisting in strategic planning, organizing, and managing work acceptance and execution for PF Division.
- Development of group resources to enable execution of work in support of the hydrodynamic, subcritical, global security and work for others.
- Assisting in the management of Integrated Work Documents (IWD's) to ensure work is approved and authorized.
- Assisting in the management of training to ensure workers are qualified and authorized.
- Support the development of personnel to promote excellence at all levels and establish an environment of trust and mutual respect.
- Assist the Group Leader in recruiting, staffing, and diversity; performance appraisals and employee development; addressing and resolving personnel issues; time and labor approvals and salary management; overall quality, and effectiveness, planning for capabilities; and security issues.
- Assist with financial management, oversight, and staffing planning and forecasting.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Experience successfully managing and leading machining and fabrication operations at small and intermediate sized machine shops.
- Experience in the application of sound business practices and judgment, excellent fiscal management skills, excellent strategic and tactical planning skills, technical advocacy, and the achievement of goals of significant impact, complexity, or size.
- Experience in managing hazardous operations requiring formality of operations.
- Demonstrated success in all functional areas of line management.
- Demonstrated ability to build and grow both internal and external organizational relations.
- Knowledge of industrial manufacturing processes and equipment.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written, with an achievement of strong peer-to-peer relationships, demonstrated negotiation skills, and the ability to work across technical and organizational boundaries to accomplish program goals.
- Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to the long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of the organization.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- A strong record of expertise and accomplishment in one or more of the Group's mission areas, as demonstrated by technical contributions, project management and/or supervisory experience.
- A strong commitment to continuous improvement
- Strong working knowledge of the breadth of PF activities.
- Experience with the operation and oversight of machine tool equipment.
- Experience with shop management software systems for control of manufacturing equipment and processes.
- Experience working with hazardous materials and following relevant Laboratory policies
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
