The Applied Technologies Group (A-3) is seeking a deputy group leader with experience in a broad range of engineering and scientific expertise to support various NNSA and strategic partnership programs. The Group leads and contributes to national programs surrounding non-proliferation, counterterrorism and counterproliferation. A-3's core areas of expertise include advanced RF systems, electromagnetic effects, reverse engineering and vulnerability assessments, applied physics, mechanical design and evaluation, cyber-physical analysis, and guiding maturing efforts into functional solutions. Resources owned by the group include a large anechoic chamber, multiple transverse electromagnetic cells, several manual and CNC machines (mills, lathes, etc..), various additive manufacturing systems, a testbed comprised of several miles of powerlines and systems, forklifts, cranes, and multiple light labs spaces all housed across 14 facilities.
The Group integrates across the Laboratory and external teams to provide world-changing solutions directly to the field for our sponsors and stakeholders. The research is conducted up to the Q and SCI levels and the position is a half-time (0.5 FTE) management position and half-time program/project direct-funded position that supports activities within A-3.
Management responsibilities will primarily surround supporting and enabling staff as an advocate for their success. Tasks will include evaluating and authorizing hazardous work, approving timesheets, assisting with and approving procurements, coordinating facility changes/upgrades, budget oversight, and mentorship of staff spanning multiple disciplines and technical demographics. The deputy will also be expected to work with the group leader, program managers, and principal investigators to ensure strategic coherence.
The successful candidate will serve as a deputy to the group manager overseeing research and development employees and activities across multiple disciplines. Assist in establishing a vision and path for the future for their organization by ensuring the timely and successful delivery of solutions for various laboratory missions as detailed in laboratory priorities; providing strategic vision and direction for addressing emerging national scientific / technology needs; building cross-organizational collaborations and teams, and providing a robust and exciting research, development and production delivery environment for recruitment and retention of staff.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Technical
Demonstrated professional-level background with a record of achievement relevant to the group's mission.
Leadership
Demonstrated successful leadership of technical projects and personnel. Proven ability in supervising, directing assignments, assuring training and development, resolving conflicts, mentoring, team building, managing staff requirements, motivating employees, budget analysis, and monitoring performance.
Teamwork
Previous experience in building and leading teams, mentoring and motivating employees, and working effectively with all levels of internal and external personnel to gain consensus and resolve conflicts.
Safety and Security
Working knowledge of the operational rigor needed to maintain safe, secure, and regulatory-compliant operations in a national laboratory environment. The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience executing or leading hazardous work in a formal environment.
Communication
Demonstrated ability to communicate with personnel at all levels, with an emphasis on experience coordinating efforts in cross-organizational collaboration projects.
Clearance
The ability to obtain a Q and SCI clearance.
Education/Experience:
Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Active "Q" and SCI clearances
- An active portfolio of work that can fund ½ of the successful candidate's time.
- A broad network of relationships that can be leveraged to enable the group.
- Experience working with sponsors outside the NNSA/DOE.
- Knowledge of test hardware and experimental design methodologies.
- Experience with work bound by complex safety and/or security considerations.
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
