What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Development and Fabrication Tec 4 or 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Test Engineering Group (V-14) supports the national security and nuclear deterrent missions by providing high-quality empirical evidence through the execution and assessment of weapons system and component testing. We are looking for a candidate to support the Thermal and Mechanical Testing Team in V-14.

The successful candidate will work in test labs alongside R&D Engineers and Engineering Technologists, and be hands-on with large equipment to include maintenance and troubleshooting test equipment. In addition to indoor laboratory work, the selected candidate will work at outdoor firing sites in support of explosive testing for system qualification. Such activities will involve coordination efforts with various team members from V-14 and other testing organizations. These include, but are not limited to, test setup, site preparation and maintenance, and cross-group coordination activities to prepare and successfully execute tests.

Instilling and supporting a safety and security-conscious environment are paramount in all assignments and actions. Compliance with LANL and facility safety and security practices, and delivering accurate test results in a team effort are central to all testing efforts. Additional job responsibilities include participating in the development of new testing technologies and techniques and implementing quality assurance requirements.

Performance of job responsibilities will require working in controlled environments that may include high explosives, radioactive materials, radiation generating devices, and other hazardous materials.

Development and Fabrication Tec 4 ($72,800 - $115,400)

Successful applicants will perform the following duties in this position:
  • Provide support for collecting data and running tests.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and provide knowledgeable input.

Development and Fabrication Tec 5 ($87,800 - $143,000)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level, candidate will:
  • Provide training in the areas of design, manufacturing, assembly and testing.
  • Write safety procedures for tests and test equipment.
  • Coordinate testing activities with customers and service providers for test execution

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Extensive experience with various hand tools and working with complex assemblies and/or diagnostics
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain and troubleshoot test equipment
  • Experience working with material handling equipment
  • Experience working under Integrated Work Documents (IWDs)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects / tasks in a dynamic work environment
  • Demonstrated willingness to adhere to safety protocols, in particular while working with hazardous materials
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE security clearance at the Q level.
Additional Job Requirements for Development and Fabrication Tec 5:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Experience working with hazardous materials (e.g., rad and/or high explosives)
  • Familiarity with Measuring and Test Equipment (M&TE) and calibration
  • Demonstrated mentorship and training on test equipment and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to self-motivate and work independently
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires an Associates' Degree and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an Associates' Degree and a minimum of 7 years relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or engineering technology may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience fielding and acquiring data with cameras, accelerometers, thermocouples, or strain gauges
  • HE Handler certification
  • Forklift training/certification
  • Qualified Crane Certifications
  • Active DOE Q clearance
  • Modest machining experience
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is one year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
